Must Buy 02's? 1- Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock.
Have bought the superb Central Victorian wines of Jasper Hill religiously up to the 00 vintage. Unemployment broke the habit-sadly.
Anyway, had the 01 recently and found a lighter and more regional expression of shiraz. Certainly a change from the super ripe late 90's vintages- 98 a personal favourite and the focused blackberry beast of 97 memorable too.
TN- 2002 Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock shiraz-
Atypically opaque dark purple.
The nose is big, ripe and youthful-pleasantly lifted ( some discernible VA ) with the standard Georgia's choc licorice, choc berry, tar, blackberry and some savoury oak undertones.
Youthful, full bodied shiraz flavours with the evident textured smoothness of Jasper Hill wine. Stock standard blackberries, choc licorice and a hint of regional pepper, impress on the palate with a persistance of flavour- aided by a flooding of ripe and slightly aggressive tannin.
Japer Hill alchohol levels generally inversely proportional to bottle weight. The heat not at all in evidence in 02. Coming in at 14.5%.
The 02 seems to be a little less ripe than some previous vintages. IMHO a cracker and a fair bet for the cellaring portfolio of 02!

Definitely, had this at a recent dinner against some very heavy hitters (Shirvington, Hanisch, HOG) and was almost wine of the night, highly impressive wine.
Add to it the 02 Summerfield Reserve Shiraz also!

hello gentlemen,
went back to my notes from last year and recalled the 02 has great fruit purity but also some pretty aggressive tannin as well. bought a couple of the 01 later and was too scared to try it, thinking it might another tannic monster now it looks that the 01 is of more elegant style and maybe suitable for earlier drinking (relatively)?

on your recommendation i picked up a bottle of the clonakilla SV from watson's today. and what a wine---the exotic floral/spice component is most unique. i am tempted to get more...but gee it's HK$388pb. what do these SV taste like with 5-10 years bottle age?

Re the Clonakilla 01 SV. A unique and classic Australian wine. In comparison to the 01's from Cote Rotie, it has similar structre of the top flights, which will no doubt go 10 years plus. Good clean acids, fine but evident tannin. Certainly not the ripe fruits and bruising alchohol ( seems to accentuate the hot finish with the viognier ) of some Australain SV.
388 HK is CHEAP! I paid this for a bottle of Wolf Blass red label in Shanghai last night.
But seriously, $388 about current release price from mailing list. Aswell as being much better quality than equivalently priced Cote Rotie in HK.

I agree. Due a near six to one conversion rate ( I tell my wife it's four to one when she shops ).
Aswell, a few vintages have been on the shelves for a while. 95 Dead Arm available for $80 at the Sai Kung Yacht Club-restaurant prices- a good example.
Hard to get good prices on well known Penfolds, Henschke etc.

I agree. Due a near six to one conversion rate ( I tell my wife it's four to one when she shops ).

alan, well i agree with jamie the prices were good relative to the exchange rate, especially earlier this year when the $A was at record high. i have noticed in the last 2 months when the new stocks arrived they are priced around 10-15% higher. but then it still looks cheap because the $A has gone up by 20-25%.
its difficult to say if the overall pricing in $HK are dropping because of the idiosyncratic on and off heavy discounting especially at watsons. but to give you an example voyager cab/merlot 99 was at its cheapest $200 last year and but this year the 00 (discounted) $220. same story with the 00 vs 01 shiraz. Majella cabs/shiraz 99 were also at one stage below $200, but now the 00 shiraz is $258 net.

I think the Clonakilla is at a good price as well. They tried to charge me HK 300 (Aus $45) for a Rawson Retreat in a restaurant last time!
Guess I just have to avoid all the big names and RP rated wines when I go to HK. I saw Greenock Creek RR Shiraz 95 at HK $8000 at the start of the year...
It is always interesting to note how some wines are preferred in different countries. For example, the price of Cristal is twice that of Dom Perignon, while Krug is cheaper than the two (Opposite in Australia I think).
