As I stuck my head out last week stating that the 2002 Palmara Pinot Noir was better than the 2002 Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir, I thought it only appropriate to back up that statement and hopefully add some credibility to it. So, I opened another bottle over the weekend in order to provide a full tasting note. Here it is:
TN: 2002 Palmara Pinot Noir (Coal River Valley, Tasmania)
Very light bodied in appearance. Cherry red and translucent.
The nose is reasonably intense and quite exiting with sap, strawberries and a floral touch.
The wine is very light bodied on the palate as well yet has excellent flavour intensity. The front and middle palate is filled with very sappy “strawberries and cream†fruit, slightly confected like the jelly lolly of the same name, as well as plum and dark cherry. These flavours are lifted, indeed they dance on the tongue, due to the presence of long, fine and totally unobtrusive acid. Despite its light body, the wine gives no impression of leanness and has no holes of unpleasant acidity like so many other Australians. It finishes elegantly with the sappy strawberry fruit lingering. Very, very fine nearly nonexistent tannins. The wine is a bit on the simple side but it is only young and its structure, although delicate, is balanced impeccably and will definitely allow the wine to benefit over the next 5 years. This little wine is rated Highly Recommended. At $22.50, only from the cellar door, this delightful example of New World Pinot Noir is amazing good value in the world of Pinot Noir.
This wine is more enjoyable than any rosé I have tasted, including the Charlie Melton or the Rockford, and provides a great change to some of the Pinot Noir monsters that are being created.

P.S. Do you have some sort of automated Wine Forum New Post tracker?
No. I am eating my lunch (strawberries and cream today) and was lucky enough to be able to read one of your excellent posts whilst it was still young and fresh.
