Down in and around Canberra last weekend so grabbed some Clonakilla O Riada Shiraz 2009, and a bottle each of the 2008 Lerida Estate Shiraz, and Shiraz Viognier.

Some notes from a recent tasting:

Chateau Labegorce 1975: Good color, silky but slightly metallic, did not last very long on the palate - weakest wine of the evening.

Chateau Palmer 1975: Still dark color, an elegant wine with good tannins and length, can still go some years - nice drinking.

Sylou Corton Clos du Roi 1943: I had no high expectation for this one due to the age but got very positively surprised. The wine had still a bright ruby color with brownish touch. Very silky, still good structure and surprising changes in aromas over the time - a great experience to see how well wine can age.

Gernot Heinrich Salzberg 2004: What a powerhouse – dark colored, very rich with a lovely nose of fruits and spices. A very good wine but almost too much at the moment, should be kept for another 5 years at least but then it will be a great experience.

Henschke Keyneton Estate Shiraz / Cabernet / Malbec 1985: A big W O W for the third time!!!!! This was the third bottle of the Keyneton 1985 I tried now in the last few month and every bottle was a sensation. Unfortunately only one is left……

Henschke Hill of Grace 1989: Still dark colored, well concentrated with a wonderful complex nose with a lot of fruits, blackcurrant and sweet spices. Creamy-textured in the mouth, perfect length on the palate - great stuff.

Chateau Lafon 1966: This one was an example how an aged well made Sauternes can taste. Pale mahogany color, with an intense nose of apricots and brown sugar. Still a bit fat with a perfect structure and length. Maybe it could be a touch sweeter but overall a wonderful wine to close a remarkable evening.

i've tried a few bottles of the 02 Basket Press Shiraz, and been somewhat disappointed with all them (porty & unbalanced), particularly given the 02 Barossan vintage reports.
The reason for my post is because i'm not very familiar with the Flaxman and Hoffman and wondered whether they're occasionally released (?). If so, did the best fruit go in them, resulting in the BP been soemwhat disappointing?

Interested to hear you thoughts, and others who've tried it/them.

Hi Kris. Can you give a little more detail? The Warhol thing is a mystery to me. Velvet Underground did a Warhol tribute in 1990 - perhaps that should have been linked to the 1990 Dom (which I loved as often as I could)

Of course you pay a premium for the packaging but i'm a sucker for warhol. The labels aren't actually designed by Warhol as he's obviously not with us any more but have been designed by some London design firm.

Based on he last couple of timesI've had the 02 BP, I tend to agree with the portiness statement (I didn't prior to that). The Flaxman and Hoffman are part of the SVS range released in miniscule quantities at CD. The SVS range tend to be single vineyard and the source often differs each vintage. As such, the best fruit doesn't necessarily go into these. For what its worth, the Flaxman (Eden Valley) was superb.

I paid AUD 20 per bottle premium for mine. They look great, though its what's in the bottle that ultimately counts. (yes, I know, I'm a victim of fashion etc etc etc!).

...and quite a lot of pretty unremarkable Chilean wine, although the sav blanc and chardonnays I've had have been quite good. The reds have all been simple, smooth and sweet, tasting generally like middle of the range American merlot (particularly the Carmenere), whatever the varietal.
