My new cellar

Post by Teddy »

Hi there, I have been meaning to post as I was building this cellar but just never got around to it. Anyway it's finishd now apart from I have no racks yet, hopefully in the next month or so.
The external walls are double wraped sisalation then steel batten which creates a small cavity then 75mm thick hebal panel which has great thermal qualities and then rendered over that. All walls and ceilings also have insulation betweem studs and rafters.
The internal walls and ceiling are extruded foam panel, and I have installed a Fondis 25 cooling unit, which so far is working like a dream. The cellar door is a solid vic ash timber with a double glazed argon gas filled glass panel and the floor is 20mm natural sandstone. As the location of the cellar is off our games room we decided to make a feature of it as well, so lined the cellar with miniorb and messamate timber lining. We are really happy with the way it turned out just need our racks to be complete.
Regards
Trev

Looks good.
The door is UV/tinted or something? You really don't want light in the cellar...
cheers,

Impressive, great feature of the house, and nicely finished.

I would be putting a lock (or alarm) on it next to the billiard room if you have teenage kids....or even older ones....

Graeme the door does have a slight tint to it, but since the photo i have installed a roll down blind to the inside of the door, which i plan to keep down most of the time just open it when i want to.
also the door is lockable, but my two girls are only 3and 5 year old so should have a bit of time before i have to worry about them. Ithink it's biggest threat is me coming home after a big night feeling like a late night tipple.

Great post, well done. Lucky is the wine that lives in that cellar.

Trev,

Was the door custom built or did you source it from somewhere?

Hi there, the door is a solid hardwood frame with double glazed argon gas filled panel, I did get it made. Off memory it was about $800. It also has rubber seals all around the door including the floor so it's pretty airtight.
I have some racks in now which I made, still have couple of walls to go but getting there. I will post a couple of pics.
Cheers Trev

Have you got temperature sensor located in the cellar to make sure temperature stays around 15C year round.

I did do that at the beginning, while the air sometimes fluctuates + - degree or too it does not change the bottle temperature, even the last few weeks we have had about 12 days at 40+ degrees and the temp is very constant.

Nice cellar. a little too accessible to the games room from my perspective. You need to at least make it hard to get those late night mistaken consumptions :D
