September what are you buying

Post by graham »

I'll start the ball rolling
12 2009 Clonakilla shiraz-viognier
The release looks exceptional, on par with the 2007 which was released in tiny quantities. Don't expect notes for a decade :D

Have you got your mailing list yet? I'm assuming it won't be an immediate sell-out like the 07 but I certainly don't want to miss out given I'm budgeted for a case this year (cripes).

Elsewhere in recent weeks:
3x 1998 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon (auction - this was our wedding wine)
2x 2008 Ata Rangi Pinot (thank you again NZ duty free)
3, 65, 7, 50

Yep, mail list out today. The bugger is I've got Rockford (stonewaller) coming up as well as my Vat 1 and 47.
I also brought Alex Head wines 6 Brunette and 6 Blonde , only made in small amounts but a wonderful wine. Get some if you can.

Started the month with an order for:
6 x 2006 Kurtz Family Vineyards 'Boundary Row' GSM
3 x 2006 Kurtz Family Vineyards 'Boundary Row' Shiraz
3 x 2007 Kurtz Family Vineyards 'Seven Sleepers' Red Blend.

Tasted these at the Barossa in Boardshorts event (ran into Jeremy - where's the post dude?). Liked the bloke, his wines and their prices. Not old-style Barossa but pretty close for me. Great balance.

Cheers

With the latest round of releases and mailouts upon and a comment earlier in this post It made me wonder any of you guys have a system to list your expected wine purchases during the year?
Thinking I need to have something in place to help with budgeting i.e. stashing enough money away from the wife, reckon it will also help with storage and consumption.

If any of you have got something in place would be interest on soem details.

Cheers

A mixed dozen of Blake Family Vineyeards 'Redd Gravels' -- 4 each of the '05, '06 & '07.

I could perhaps bring the all-conquering '05(http://geoffkellywinereviews.co.nz/index.php?ArticleID=149) along to the Kiwi icons tasting when we make it happen?

(For NZers who don't get Caros' emails, they're offering 'tiny quantities' of '04 - '07 at $65.)

Cheers

Still no sign of my Clonakilla mailing list and I'm starting to get paranoid - off the the Gold Coast tomorrow so won't get the post till the weekend. I really don't want to miss out, do people think I should swallow my pride and call the winery tomorrow or will I be ok to hang on till Monday?

Would be a good wine to try Peter esp the 05. Ive tried the 06 and although I really wanted to "discover" a new great NZ bdx blend, it just wans't my cup of tea. Ultra modern, rich and oaky. Love to try the 05 now it has some age and would be interesting to see it up against a 05 Coleraine.

Seems like it is GK's style - closer to Craggy Range or Church Rd Reserve than Te Mata

Ended up sharing a mixed case with a friend, expect to double dip next month
Clonakilla
2x 09 Shiraz Viognier
2x 09 Hilltops Shiraz
2x 09 O’Riada Shiraz

To answer the ealier question, the only wines i consistently budget to buy on release are Felton Road Blocks and Collector, funnily both limit what you can buy. My wife is pretty relaxed on the spending as long as she gets to share the spoils. Although i do cellar some with Wine Ark in case
I'd also like to be on the Rockford list (sounds fun, and the lunch etc) but i've tended to be underwhelmed on my Basket Press experiences (99, 00, 02, 03). The Black Shiraz however is worth the hype IMO. Never tried the Lakes Folly Chardy but if the powerball ever drops i'd like to be on that too!

Cheers

Ha, nice one Mick, just about to click on the same order with Clonakilla! Hoping for their sake they've got a good amount of wine from the 09 as the hype is quite amazing. So happy also that their pricing has stayed consistent, keeps me devoted and positive, nice one my namesake Tim K.

Cheers

Nothing so far but it's only 3 days into the month and WIP. Nothing for the past few weeks actually and that's not good. There's an auction next week and there a few good wines looking for a good home.

Almost bought a 6 pack of Vasse Felix 207 Cabernet while buying a 6 pack of Little Creatures Lager but swmbo said "Control yourself". Later maybe.....

Some extra-cheapies including a bottle of Annie's Lane riesling 09 to try for about $7.85 and a bottle of Tatachilla Partners cab shiraz 08 for $9.99 coz I like it, just to get a few $s more off a sole bottle of Penfolds St Henri 2006 that takes my meagre tally of St Henri to 1x96, 2x02 and now 1x06. It was about $0.30 cheaper at the barn than at Dan's in a 6pk. These three are Halliday's highest rated St Henri across the last 20 vintages with the exception of the 03 (missed that one!) that equals the 96 at 95pts, the latter two a point higher, both rated 96pts. There were also some 01s but strangely there's no tn of it on the site.

3x 2007 McWilliams Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz
3x 2008 Clonakilla O’Riada Shiraz

Even though I already have 2000 and 2005 Maurice O'Shea, after reading the reviews of the 2007 I couldn't resist. Seems like one not to miss out on. Perhaps need to get some Rosehill and OP&OH as well such is the goodness of 2007 Hunter Shiraz. Then there's also Tyrrells... ouch my bank balance.

My first venture into Clonakilla. Will have to step up to the SV at some point. Is it CD only?
