Mid Week Drinkies
Yes, one of my little guessing games again ... sorry bout that, but its a bit of fun.
So, what are you drinking/enjoying currently?
2009 Nick O'Leary Shiraz
Mine .....Lovely deep red black, very little purple, but very very bright and inviting. The nose is very intense, it filled the room as soon as the bottle was opened. Out wafted blackberry, spices, touches of lifted white pepper, red berries and a hint of deli meats, in a great and complexing way. Opulent, flamboyant almost, but really balanced.
The palate too is outstanding, the texture is what you notice first, its like velvet in your mouth, but evolving through the palate so that the very fine and ripe, but firm, tannins give the wine structure, and give the finish delineation. Its a gorgeous mouthful of berry fruits, exotic spices, touches of savoury oak, pepper, deli meats and much more. Its super young, really tight, but opens up and unwinds slowly. Really fabulous wine now, with a brilliant future ahead of it. Cool climate Shiraz at its finest, and one of the best young Shiraz wines I've had in a fair while! Too young, but delicious.

Hmm, interesting guess, reminded me that I must try one of the Collector's - you going to stock them Gav? And I've heard the Riebke 09 not as good as the 08... ??
Myself, with pressure from Mrs TiggerK, have been trying a large range of current release Chardonnay's over the past week or three, with an intermittent red popping up here and there. Sticking to under $40, and preferably under $30, have tried all sorts including Nepenthe, Yalumba, Penfolds (311), Craggy Range and a few others I've forgotten for now.... all decent, but nothing amazing there.
But standout favourites have been...
1st Bay Of Fires Chardonnay 2008 - quite french in style, elegant, delicate, delicious and Extremely Good ($29)
2nd Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2007 - Superb balance of acid, oak and powerful rich fruit. Very Very Good. ($36)
3rd Louis Latour Macon-Villages Chameroy 2008 - Subtle quality fruit and not too worked. Great QPR ($20). Very Good
Others over past week...
Henschke Johanns Garden GSM 2005 - bit awkward actually, wanted to like it, but not really happening for me, suspect it was more my vibe being off rather than the wine itself on this occasion. Just Good.
Murdoch Cab Sav 2003 - good, albeit a tiny bit of reductive oxidisation note. Solid Good.
Peregrine Pinot Noir 2007 - really should leave it alone for a year or two, but it's not bad at all right now, sharp and varietal, had with spicy indian tonight so enjoyed rather than savoured. Good Good.
Cheers
Tim

Re: Mid Week Drinkies
Aiming high. Sounds like the Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2009.
Re: Mid Week Drinkies
Ah, yes forgot to have a guess. Suspect qwertt is on the money with Clonakilla... Was suspecting the Jack Reidy Shiraz 2009, but that's VC exclusive, so perhaps not.
Could it be the Clonakilla Hilltops 2009?

2005 Vieux Télégraphe CDP
Stern but enjoyable. Adzuki? beans was about as fruity as it got Savoury stuff with a tannic kicker. Went well with porkolt and spaetzle. Excellent and pips the 2007 had last month as far as personal preference goes. The 2007 was far more accessible.
2006 Duval Plexus SGM
A touch confected/icing sugar but not pruney or dead. Boisterous, simple wine that didn't need food. Very Good.
1998 Meerea Park Alexander Munroe Shiraz (Aged release)
Leathery and smokey nose with a touch of barnyard. Interesting in that I liked the nose but Rebecca took one sniff and wouldn't go near it. Palate started as short but then developed to thin and metallic. I really wanted to like this but disappointing!
1987 Lindemans Stevens Hermitage
Fell over i.e. bloomed in a couple of hours but that time was great. Pure nose of red fruit with some forest floor. Pinot-like. Light palate with tannins fully resolved that had acid in check for the first couple of hours. Then bandaids++ Excellent at first until something grew in there.
2003 Marchesi De Frescobaldi Brunello Di Montalcino Castelgiocondo
Pop and pour. Now this is better. Smooth, rich mid-weight palate of wild cherry and tobacco/cedar. Not the most complex wine but it kept you coming back for more. Very Good.
cheers

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?
Re: Mid Week Drinkies
Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 - excellent wine for the price. No time for a tasting note, but highly recommended.
Re: Mid Week Drinkies
Dinner tonight at Roxanne in Glebe.
First time at the restaurant, food was pretty top notch, however the service was quite lacking (i think they were training a new girl who had next to no idea what was going on). Nonetheless:
2009 Pewsey Vale Riesling: really lovely: lime, flint, acid, green apple, wet rock with many years up its sleeve. A very good quality wine and for only $12 on purchase, brilliant value.
2008 Iron Gate Chardonnay: Smelt like a horse, didn't touch. Not sure the hunter is really cut out for chardonnay.
2002 Kilikanoon Covenant: can be very hit an miss with brett hitting some bad bottles. This bottle was wonderful though. Smelt of dark fruit, plums, cloves & blueberries, a hint of aniseed & chocolate and the mouthfeel was velvet like. Probably good to go now if you have any tucked away.
Overall really nice food and good value, but service leaved a bit to be desired.

Re: Mid Week Drinkies
hi Gavin you have sold me with your write up. Do you stock this wine? I emailed Nick o'Leary, unfortunately there are no stockists in Perth.

Currently I don't stock it (yet) but will be. Loved it, and have the 2010 Riesling here also to look at, which is supposed to be really good!
So will be available soon, pm me anytime if you wish to get some, be my pleasure to help.
