Post by rens »

I'm particularly interested to hear some feedback from some people around the aging of red wine. Particularly the differences that bottle size makes. I know a smaller bottle (375ml) ages quicker than a magnum. But my question is by how much? Does a magnum give you a few extra years or a whole lot of extra years. I hope someone who drinks/tastes a lot, like Ian, or a few of the other prolific tasters have compared similarly stored wines where only the bottle size is different.
Thanks for your input guys and girls.

FWIW, I assume a half bottle ages twice and fast as a 750ml, and a magnum twice as slow. Rough rule of thumb for me.

Not sure it's quite that clearcut. A mate of mine bought two dozen 1975 or 1976 Lynch Bages 375mls and most of them were gorgeous. Not sure 750mls would go another 35 years and magnums another 105 years!
NB: I import wine from 100 boutique producers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, NZ and SA. You may think my opinions are biased ;-) As opinions are :-)

Yep, definitely not clear cut, esp for sauternes. Just my very rough rule of thumb to make sure I remember to drink halves before they fall over, and not to rush into larger formats. Also find that vintage ports in halves can be pretty bullet proof in good storage.

Had some halves of 2002 turkey Flay shiraz which came around probably 18m to 2 years before the 750mls
