Single bottles from the local barn this evening:

I've been drinking little other than < $10 chardies as my preferred white wine for a while, felt like a change so picked up a bottle of JC Riesling 08 that I'm presently tasting. It's OK but it doesn't have the depth of lemon/lime I like in a riesling, think it may have a tad much residual sugar. Not the best I've had of the line but it is disappearing rather more quickly than it perhaps should - it is "only" 12.5% alc though.

I rarely buy varietal merlot, think the last was Blue Poles Reserve 07(?). Anyway, saw Trevor Mast's Four Sisters 05 marked down from $12.99 to $9.00 so grabbed a bottle to try. It may be interesting given it's age. It's multi-regional, screwcapped, 14% alc.

I've only glanced at the Barn's discontinued lines shelves recently but had noted there were some beers there so had a look at a 500ml bottle of pilsner that is in fact a Scottish beer, Harviestoun Brewery Schiehallion(the name of a mist-enshrouded Scottish mountain apparently). It was that it's a pilsner my interest was piqued. Only noticed when I had a closer look to write this, a banner around the top of the neck announcing that it won Pilsner Of the Year at the World Beer Awards 2008, for whatever that's worth. For $3.40, I'm hoping it'll be good tomorrow night when it's well-chilled, better than the Crown Lager I drank over the Labour Day weekend but that shouldn't be difficult. 4.8% alc.

I'm with you rocket. I wish more wines came in halves. Takes the pressure off . I often pour off half a full bottle into one of my empty 375s. Same in effect (though often the 375 put away ends up getting drunk too )

I also had the chance to try some older Bordeaux wines:

1981 Chateau Mouton Rothschild: Very good soon after opening the bottle, lots of fruit, soft. But after about an hour, it seems that the wine faded away. It recovered a bit after a while but overall it was a disappointment.

1982 Chateau Leoville Las Cases: Still dark color, ripe tannins which nicely softened after the bottle was open for an hour or so. Superb wine.

1983 Chateau Latour: Star of the evening for me, incredibly fine and very silky, long sweet finish. Wonderful wine.

1989 Chateau Mouton Rothschild: Impressive start, dark-colored, still quite some tannins, good finish. Has still some to time to go.

Overall, a nice line-up with very good wines but I still prefer the good old Australian stuff. For example, the Pepper Tree Reserve Shiraz 1993 was a wonderful experience how well Shiraz ages. Loads of fruits, blackberries, great softness and a never ending finish - a great wine.

Rens, my cellar has about 40 square meters and is stocked now with roughly 2k bottles. I will try to bring it down a bit again but as I mentioned there are currently some many tempting offers around that it will be a bit difficult.
