April - what have you been buying?

Post by odyssey »

It's the pinch and punch day of the month again, what have we been buying? :)

First cab off the ranks after securing (rather grudging) approval from the better half to buy a mixed case.
The one requirement from her was to "buy some pinot". With pleasure...

1x Jasper Hill Cornella Vineyard Grenache 2008
1x Felton Road Pinot Noir 2008
1x Paringa Estate Pinot Noir 2007
1x Stonier Pinot Noir 2007
2x Peterson's Back Block Shiraz 2007
2x Leo Buring Eden Valley Riesling 1999
1x Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon 2003
1x Tyrell's Stevens Semillon 2006
2x Charles Melton Rose of Virginia 2009

Actually bought late march but the McWilliams hasn't been delivered yet so it might count for April:
3* 06 McWilliams Rosehill Shiraz
3* 06 McWilliams OH&OP Shiraz
2 Spanish wines I can't remember the names of but they were both riojas
2* NV Morris Muscat to top the barrel
1* 08 Miranda Golden Botrytis. - haven't bought this for years so thought I should try it again.
1 bottle of something else I can't remember. Gee, it's not a very interesting post!
Cheers,
Kris

I think I have to cut down a bit on my buying, but I got some nice Austrialian bottles, so I could not resist:

2 x Henschke Keyneton Estate 1985
1 x Henschke Hill of Grace 1989
1 x Henschke Cyrill Henschke 1991
2 x Henschke Abbotts Prayer Merlot-Cabernet 1996
1 x Penfolds Grange 1982
1 x Penfolds Grange 1999
3 x Penfolds St. Henri Claret Special Vintage 1984
1 x Penfolds Shiraz Magill Estate 1993
6 x Rockford Hoffmann Vineyard Shiraz 2003
1 x Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road Shiraz 2004
6 x Noon Winery Eclipse 2008
3 x Greg Norman Chardonnay 2001
6 x Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 1997

12 x Château St-Jean Johannisberg Riesling Belle Terre Alexander 1991

3 x Chateau Clerc Milon 1949
2 x Château Beausejour 1957
4 x Chateau Pichon Longueville 1959
1 x Chateau Leoville Poyferre 1959
1 x Chateau Lafon Rochet 1959
1 x Chateau Troplong Mondot 1962
1 x Chateau Gallais-Bellevue 1964
1 x Chateau du Vieux-Guinot 1969
3 x Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 1969
1 x Chateau Coutet 1976
1 x Chateau Suduiraut 1979
1 x Chateau Palmer 1979
1 x Chateau Lafite 1988
1 x Chateau Haut Brion 1988

1 x Leroy D'Auvenay 1961
12 x Henri Rebourseau Mazis Chambertin 1986
1 x Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1996
1 x DRC Montrachet 2006

6 x Pio Cesare Barolo 1964
1 x Gaja Barbaresco 1982
2 x Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva 1993
3 x Gianni Voerzio Barolo La Serra 1988
4 x Gianni Voerzio Serrapiu 1990
1 x Gianni Voerzio Ciabot della Luna 1998

1 x Bodegas Roda Cirsion 1999
12 x Bodegas Aalto Aalto PS 2006
6 x Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa 2007
6 x Montes Montes M 1996

When the Clerc Milon 1949 arrived, one bottle had leaked as the cork had been sucked into the bottle, despite a perfect capsule (don't ask me how - see the bottle) and the bottle was only 2/3 full. As we had invited some friends for dinner I had already opened a bottle of Beni Batasiolo Barolo Vigneto Boscareto 1985 and a Greenock Creek Seven Acre Shiraz 1998. With little hope, that the Clerc Milon 1949 was still o.k., I also "opened" that bottle. But what a surprise, it turned out to be an excellent wine. It had still a good color and it was smooth and silky, hints of fruits and with a very nice sweetness in the long finish. The Barolo was also going very strong despite the age, very good color, spicy and peppery, a beautiful wine. For the finish, we had the Seven Acre which was superb, with loads of fruit, silky and well balanced and a long, long finish.

Rooman: I also recently tried the Willi Schäfer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese 1998. It was a very pleasing bottle, good minerality and and nice balance between acidity and sweetness. For me, it could even be a tick sweeter. But a very nice wine indeed.

Cheers and happy drinking.

If you can excuse my rudeness in asking, from where did you manage to get such an eclectic array of old wine? TIA

Hi dlo, I usually buy them from auctions, live and internet, but also from shops or private people. There are always good offers around and so far I was very surprised that I really rarely get bad wines.

Cheers.

As ususal I jealous. One day I will head up to Switzerland for the sole purposes of drinking some of these wines with you :D :D . I glad you enjoyed the Willi Schafer. I am trying to put a couple more of the 08 cases down in the cellar if for no better reason than to keep my sticky fingers off the 07. If I don't keep throwing more cases down, I will never let the bulk of the cellar get enough age to reach their true potential.

INteresting. Will have to put that on my list. I am on a NZ syrah quest at the moment.

My current favourites;

Craggy Range Le Sol, 2002, 2005, 2007.
Bilancia La Collina 2002
Awaroa "Melba Peach" reserve syrah 2008(?maybe 07).

The Bilancia Syrah viognier 2007 is good value for money too, though not in the same league.

How does it compare to any of those wines, would you say?

4 2005 Domaine Marcoux Chateauneuf-du-Pape

6 2005 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Only problem is that I wont be touching any for 10-15 years.

Had a bottle of the Oracle 04 recently. It has huge fruit not yet integrated fully with the oak, will take perhaps another 10 years to achieve a balanced maturity.

Again from auction this time the local case lot auction:

6 x Punters Corner 2002 Shiraz. A house quaffer that's surprisingly good

4 x Leabrook Estate 2003 Cabernet Merlot. Ditto above.

And lined up from the local Hardy's dumping round this Saturday:

6 x Sir James 2005 Vintage Sparkling cleanskin. About $40 per dozen)

6 x Hardy's Padthaway 2006 Riesling cleanskin. Always a good quaffer. Again about $40 per dozen.

All of the above also bought for friends as well.
