Had this at the famous/infamous/notorious Apex Bakery Luncheon Club in Tanunda. This was a real Steingarten as opposed to the current multi vineyard blend.
The fill level was ok but the cork was crumbly, slimy and black. This did not look good for a drinkable wine. After the cork was extracted in pieces the wine was poured into a glass with the expectation that it would be stuffed. I had the first whiff and after I smiled the bottle was passed around.
The colour was a deepish yellow as would be expected. The nose showed some madeirisation but there were layers upon layers of toast, marmalaide and honey with a touch of bacon fat. A complete breakfast'. The palate was a revelation - perfect balance with still strong acidity with the aromas evident on the nose dancing on the tongue. A great 40 yo Riesling and a tribute to Colin Gramp in his foresight to plant the vineyard.
