Teusner Riebke 2008

Post by daz »

Thought I’d re-sample this, having another couple of bottles in transit. Campbell’s right, it is on the sweet side with bucketloads of deep-seated blackberry fruit, and dark chocolate that balances with the charry oak and soft acid to present a very good package with very good length on the finish that carries some savoury meaty characters, coffee. With it’s inherent balance it should last up to 10 years with the proviso that the oak stays in balance with the fruit. TN is after it being left in the fridge for 24hrs or so with a couple of glasses drunk last night, re-sealed under it's screwcap. Is there a better value, archetypal, bloody big Barossa shiraz than this? Rating? Goody good good good! But more seriously, very good+/excellent, agree with Mattinson's 92pts. could extend to Halliday's 94pts in the context of it's origin.

Cheers

Thanks for the notes, Daz

I also bought the 2008, but haven't tried it yet, and in fact only recently tried the 2007 I bought previously. Similar notes to how you described the 2008, but not convinced about the balance and therefore the longevity. Nice younger, perhaps?

Cheers

Outstanding result from a tough vintage. Incredibly fresh fruit, not something I'm coming across very often with 2008 Barossan reds so far. Having said that it's an early drinker for me. One of the best things about it is the liveliness. Can't see the point in wasting that aspect.
As always, IMVHO. And Cheers

I agree it's drinking very well whilst young. JH gives it to 2015, CM 2014. I still think it has the fruit go 8-10 years but there may not be sufficient tannin to carry it there and although the fruit has swallowed the charry oak it spent at least some time in, that oak may well come to the fore over time. I've still about a third of the bottle in the fridge slowly oxidising so will report back when I get around to having some more, when I'm in the mood. It's a wine that, while it's delicious, is big enough to satisfy after a couple of glasses.

Cheers

Trust Kym and the crew to produce a good quaffer from the 2008 vintage. For me 2008 is the worst Barossa Vintage since probably 2003 or 2007 (without it being a disaster). While there are always exceptions to the rule, I have noticed little fruit in the SA reds, and hot alcohol. 2007 had some more long living wines (from the ones I have tried from both vintages). Though it is great to see skilled wine makers like Teusner have limited much of the impact of the poor weather leading to vintage, I willl be drinking most of the SA 2008 Reds within a few years.

The 07 Joshua is a fabulous wine, it tells no tales of dud vintage at all.
