Hello everyone i have been rolling my way thru about 20 rose wines and have to say my disappointment there have been very few really good ones so i thought rather than buying them use the auswine site to cut out alot of the hard work any help greatly recieved regards Dazza : :

The current Turkey Flat is excellent IMO and the Wirra Wirra is worth drinking. I didn't like the Charles Melton "Rose of Virginia" as I found some distracting bitterness.

Let us know which are the good 'uns you have found.

Freeman Rondo Rose

Bass Phillip Rose


Interesting, savoury, Food-friendly wines not too high in alcohol or sugar.

The Grapes of Ross Ruby Tuesday Rose is a cracker. A Blend of sangiovese and shiraz and a Gold Medal winner at the latest Barossa Wine Show.

I refrained from posting the Salsa as a suggestion Allan because Dazza mentioned having tried 20 or so. I've not tried subsequent vintages but the first one was very good indeed - Kim says on the website that the fruit for it is grown/harvested specifically for the Salsa. The earlier Turkey Flats I tried were pretty good too. A Barossa grenache and shiraz thing perhaps?

Bloody good option I reckon, the inaugural vintage had some fruit, was a bit savoury and finished dry from memory. I'll PM you soon Allan, been thinking of doing so since you became a bit more active here again, hope you're going well, and Sue of course. Best to you both.

I didnt mention them purely because i didnt want to take away from what people wrote in as their favourite rose's .
Also didnt want to have my opinion detract or create debate

I hope you understand and what i will do is write what was head of the list .

What i have noticed is how few i have had thats on here .

no one so far has mentioned the Thorn Clarke rose was fantastic last year with its nebbiolo fruit in it now this years hasnt the same content(grape) and is alot dryer imo than last years or annies lane etc

I heartily endorse Teusner Salsa, and the Melton Rose of Virginia. Also tried a Foxey's Hangout 08 from Morninton Peninsula last week that achieved the balance of sweet and savoury that I'm looking for.

If you can get it, grab Noon Rose (most vintages).

Dry, full bodied and goes well with a nice steak or a Thai Crispy Noodle Salad.

They also age remarkably well, I have a few previous vintages tucked away that I pull out from time to time and they have been just fantastic, just haven't had the time to write up any notes on them lately.

Look to South of France and Spain. Muga and Tondonia if you want to push the boat out (disclaimer - know importer well). Rose in Provence may be a cliche but there's a reason behind it!

I found myself entering this thread thinking I would highlight any Rose examples anybody mentioned that were NOT good, but to be honest, every single mention of Rose here has its merits in one way or another.

It's positive to see Australian's recommending good Rose that isn't overly sugary and candy-sweet for a change! Brava.

We sommeliers have a mission to convert the masses in Qld! (except you nice folk on here, who are clearly already converts!)

The Angoves Nine Vines, for around $13 is a stunner in my tiny, slightly distorted mind

Lots of bright red fruit, touch of sweetness but good acidity and balance; a great Rose for the money. Sure Jimbo always rates is highly as well.

At a recent tasting I did for some friends (who admittedly aren't all wine people), we had a blind comparison between Rockford's Alicante, Charles Melton ROV and Amphora wine's Montego Estate McLaren Vale Shiraz Rose.

Surprisingly, the Amphora was the unanimous pick. Great rose, not too sweet, with brilliant rose-water/turkish delight characters. Worth a look at <$13/bottle

The supermarket chains carry some Teusner wines but not sure about the Salsa. It seems you want only one bottle as a taster but Teusner wines are pretty good value. My latest order from the winery arrived today with a couple of bottles of the cleanskin rose 09 and a couple of bottles of the Salsa 08 so I'm planning on trying them against each other. With orders of more than $140 freight-free from the winery you could put together a similar sampling/top-up pack of 8 bottles as I did. Allan (Waiters Friend) has tried the cleanskin 09 and the Salsa 08 on different occasions, thinks the cleanskin not quite as good as the Salsa. I've still not tried the Melton, perhaps due to some variable opinions I've seen.
