Daz you put that so much more eloquently than the words I had in mind. I intend to make my way to Switzerland next year for the sole purpose of saying "hi" to Redwine ..... and his cellar.

For me, just a couple of magnums of Clos des Papes 07 for my baby girl and some Leeuwin Art Series Chard 05 for my wee boy, all birthyear wines.

Admirable reasons for such purchases :D

Cheers

Be interested in what you think of the Magnus when you get a chance to crack a bottle?

Now in Bordeaux, but noticing that the prices offerred here do not give you much of an advantage after conversions compared to Australia, even with the Tax savings. However, provenance in good wines stores will be better (many claim ex-chateau for older vintages), and there is certainly greater availability for the icon stuff including highly sought after vintages eg 2005.

For me though, only one thing has cought my eye so far...

3x 1986 Chateau Leoville Las Casses- Still the best red wine I have ever enjoyed to this day. Could not resist when spotted in great condition (ex-chateau) for under 300 Euro each.

Cheers,

Monghead.

If you are somewhere near Switzerland, try to buy the wine there. It is usally even cheaper than in the countries were the wine is produced.

Cheers and enjoy your trip.

Ha,

That's where catching up with relatives travelling through the same country comes in handy (and they are a family of 6!)...

So the bulk of my purchases here should land into my cellar a week after I'm back in sydney.

That 86 LLC is a great wine indeed (not just a tannin mouthwash like many from the vintage). I think the 2000 is on track to be at least as good, if not better.

Grant Burge Boonaburra Export Chardonnay 2007(12) - failed US sale apparently, @ $5/btl will be interesting to compare to Sacred Hill Chard 08 but I don't hold any great expectations for it, GB isn't a noted producer of cheap chards.

I got my six-pack of the Anderson 2000 Sparkling Shiraz. It's probably a little funkier than the 1999 release, and I'll keep my eye on whether the bretty aspect of it ever starts to dominate. Currently it's showing a little, and some cola sweet fruit elements. Quite grippy too.
Smack my [insert grape type here] up !

Spending spree behind me,

I think I've got a mixed bag of pinots (MacForbes and Hoddles) coming from Gavin- perhaps when the temperature in Sydney descends...

Wandered into the local barn on Saturday to pick up some cheap Verse 1 and came away with all this. I think only once have I managed to walk out of that shop without spending at least $600.

Case of pure blonde - keeps me skinny :D
6 * 08 or 09 Grant Burge Moscato - this goes too quickly in our place with the recent weather.
12 * 07 Brookland Valley Verse 1 Cab Merlot - this stuff is a bargain, will age well and is very good buying. I already have a six pack.
6 * 08 or 09 Cloudy Bay Savignon Blanc - another bargain
3 * NV Piper Heidsieck - I need more champagne - not - but couldn't resist - they were obviously price matching another chain.
3 * 04 Wynns Cab Sav - for some reason I missed out on the vintage at release. They only had 3 bottles or I would have got more.
2 * 08 or 09 Evans & Tate Pink moscato - as above
3 * 09 Cleanskin Dolcetto & Syrah - another quaffer.

Gawd, how does a bunch of cheap quaffers add up to over $600??? And I wasn't even paying attention to vintage.
Cheers,
Kris

The Grant Burge is popular at our place. I should procure the Evans & Tate for the Moscato expert at home to take a look at. She really likes the 09 Two Hands (even I did) but it is quite pricy at the rate they get knocked back!

cheers

The Evans & Tate is a little cheaper than the Grant Burge. Bottle not quite as impressive but nice clear bottle which shows off the pink and is topped by a silver crown seal. Looks a quite smart package and is a nice clean style to boot. Good for glugging.

Wow, that is a great price for the Grange.

I was very lucky to pick it up at 135 pounds a bottle with a 10% discount, price has now gone up to 220 pounds with 20% discount for a doz buy. Also noticed 2004 grange in Heathrow at 160 pounds a bottle. I left this for another trip, did not want to push my luck with Aussie customs with 6 bottles in my luggage. Pretty sad to see the hefty mark up with WET and other charges that fosters put on the home turf!!! cheers Gerry
