Adelaide Offline at T-Chow with Joe Cz 21/11/09: BOOKINGS

Post by n4sir »

Joe Czerwinski is in over from New York a few days for an MW education seminar, and would like to meet a few other keen members of the forum at an offline. The venue will again be T Chow, 68 Moonta St. Adelaide, 7pm start: BYO glasses and a quality bottle or two to share - the standard of the wines at the last offline was very good, and I'm hoping this one will match it.

I've booked two tables which should accommodate 15-20 people: please indicate here if you're interested in going, and what you'll be taking along.

Cheers,
Ian

Count me in. No guests at this stage. Wine tba, probably champagne if the heat persists until then.

As I'm highly likely to be home alone (sob sob) that night, I'll be there. I'll bring something red I'd think.

Glen, how about rounding up Pie King, he needs an outing to the city and I'm sure Sue would like a PK free evening

Thanks Ian, for taking the initiative to get this rolling. I'm looking forward to meeting as many of you as can make it.

By request, I'll be bringing a Carlisle Zinfandel (1999 Russian River Valley, 16.3%). I'll also have a more restrained California Cabernet Sauvignon, either a 1996 Ridge Montebello or 1996 Philip Togni, depending which I can get to easier in my mess of a cellar.

If I have room in the luggage I'll bring another Carlisle, either the Two Acre or a more recent Zin or Syrah.

If someone could bring a couple of good glasses for me, I'd really appreciate it as I won't be packing any.

Cheers!

With a bit of calender re-arrangement I can make it to this one. Thanks for getting it going Ian. I'm thinking of a top 09 Reisling and a red, unknown at this stage. Any requests on styles that Joe would like to see? Look forward to seeing everybody.

Gavin,

PM sent.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and am sorry to be missing some of you. I'll have to come back another time.

Since some of you have asked about preferred wine styles, I do get to taste a lot of young Australian wines here in the States, but I don't get to taste many with any age on them (the possible exception being Grange, because that's been so well known for so long over here). So I would be interested in trying cellared wines over new releases, just to get a better idea of how some of these wines evolve over time. Not interested necessarily in trophy wines, just good representatives of wines with a few years' under their belts.

Leaving from New York late tomorrow afternoon, but will check the forum again if I get a chance.

It's looking like a smaller turnout this time around - only about 7-11 people (if that's all I think I can give T-Chow a call soon to cancel the extra table). The good news is (touch wood) the forecast is for a much cooler weekend following the heatwave conditions of the last couple of weeks (and we're lucky we didn't choose the Thursday: 41C and a possible late thunderstorm is going to be one hell of a welcome for you Joe! )

Anyway, it's time for people to let on what they're thinking of taking - please keep in mind Joe has requested to try some older vintages of Australian wines. At this stage I'm thinking of taking along a 1996 Reynell Shiraz I've been keen to try for a while, and a magnum of 1992 Petaluma Chardonnay. If my +2 come along, there could be some additional interesting things too...

Joe Cz: 99 Carlisle Russian River Valley Zinfandel, 96 Ridge Montebello or 96 Philip Togni California Cabernet,
Mark Jappe: Champagne (?)
Glen: NZ or Tasmanian Pinot Noir
Gavin Trott:
707 (& maybe the Pie King?):
ck: a top 09 Reisling and a red
Lagare Lout: (maybe)
n4sir (maybe +2): 1992 Petaluma Chardonnay magnum, 1996 Reynell Basket Press Shiraz,

Cheers,
Ian

I just told my wife the forecast was for 41 degrees and she said, "That seems cool for spring." Umm, no dear. The other 41 degrees. "Oooh. Isn't that awfully hot?"

See you guys soon!

My +2 is now confirmed, and could now be a +4: a 1996 Mt Langi Shiraz could be an interesting comparison to the Reynell so I'll take that too (and maybe another bottle to be determined which will cover my party of five). We're really lucky it wasn't today - forecast is upped to 43C! (that's about 109F Joe  )

If space can be found, I'd like to come. Will have a think about what to bring, though I must admit I find it difficult to think about reds in this weather.

No problems Sean, please come along - looks like we're now up to 12-14 people, so it might be worth hanging on to that second table after all.

The latest forecast for Saturday is looking good - 23C during the day dropping to 15C overnight, and the garden gets a much needed drop of rain:

Then again, a Sparkling Shiraz or Vintage Port would be welcome too...

Just got an email from Steve (707) who now can't make it. :(

My additional +2 didn't pan out, so it's going to be a small group of 9-10 people; I've already called T-Chow to let them know & cancel the extra table:

Joe Cz: 99 Carlisle Russian River Valley Zinfandel, 96 Ridge Montebello or 96 Philip Togni California Cabernet,
Mark Jappe: Champagne (?)
Glen: NZ or Tasmanian Pinot Noir
Gavin Trott: Standish + (?)
ck: a top 09 Reisling and a red
n4sir+2: 92 Petaluma Chardonnay magnum, 96 Reynell Basket Press Shiraz, 96 Mt Langi Shiraz
Welch: (?)
Lagare Lout: (maybe)

Ouch! Hopefully the quality of the wine makes up for the extra cost Steve. 8)

The master of options bastardry (Glen) has bailed out, so we're down to 8-9 now:

Joe Cz: 99 Carlisle Russian River Valley Zinfandel, 96 Ridge Montebello or 96 Philip Togni California Cabernet,

Interesting line-up of wines, hope they go well with the food. Ian, I also hope the Petaluma Chard magnum has aged well and that your 96 shiraz' show well against Joe's US 96 cab/s. I don't have any but look forward to seeing how Gavin's HP Cab 01 performs - still have a bottle of Cullen DM 01 though the HP is predominantly from Great Southern fruit - I suspect the Cullen chard 06, given the cool vintage, may be a bit young. Welch's Penfolds Eden Valley Riesling also sounds interesting.

Have a great night all!

Cheers
