October - What have you been buying??

Post by Craig(NZ) »

New month. Nothing for me yet though a visit to my favourite wine shop sometime over the next few days might change that.

You know the drill. We taste a lot, we make judgements a lot. But at the end of the day it is the wines we actually buy that are the greatest accolade of them all. What has opened your wallet this October??

12 x Voyager Cabernet Merlot 2004
Needs another 15 years - my real problem is having enough aged but good value wines to drink between now and 2015!

Google "winedirect" in the UK, the internet arm of Hailsham Cellars, It's 12GBP so 25AUD by the case, which is a stonking bargain.
Am drinking it tonight and you'd want to leave it alone for 10 years or more. A modern day riposte to the Wynns BL of yore (1990, 96 etc).

Ditto on both points - opened one of the 04 Voyagers a few weeks ago and it's nowhere near ready. Lovely wine but some hardcore tannins at this stage. I look at the amount of wines from 2004 onwards we have in storage and think "jeez, 2015 onwards is going to be a lot of fun" but there's not much for now.

Anyway, on to the question. Recent auctions:
3x 2004 Voyager Cabernet Merlot
2x 1999 Tyrrell's Vat 18 Belford Semillon
1x 1985 Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz
(an experiment!)
3, 65, 7, 50

2x Tapestry 2007 Grenache $15/btl (Smokey, Meaty w/ decent underlying raspberryness - I liked)
3x Tapestry 2008 Bakers Valley Shiraz (drink no think Shiraz - weighty, fruity but not for aging) $10/btl
2x Kays Amery 2006 Hillside Shiraz
2x Kays Amery Mustcat
2x Kays 2009 Moscato
A couple from Leconfield, WirraWirra and Gemtree.

2007 is McLaren Vale seems to be pretty much a write off if you ask me, but as usual there seems to be the odd winery that has decent parcels of fruit they've done good things too, but the bulk of the '07 reds were a waste of time (balance issues and lots of manipulation) we caught up w/ friends and visited a few on one of the days, was pretty though w/ the hills green thanks to the rain and that wood oven pizza place in Willunga - had 3x Grenache before we visited there went really well w/ dinner.

12 x Te Mata Coleraine 2007
12 x Alana Estate Pinot Noir 2007

Had been planning on 6 of the Coleraine, but finally got seduced by the endless 'best ever' commentary ... and also finally gave into the relentless emails from Alana, at what I have to agree was a pretty good price ... still need to get some '07 Awatea & '08 Elston.

Cheers

Is that "best ever" for coleraine is it? I mean, the '05 opened my eyes to the coleraines, and if the '07's are better, I should really go long on them.....

Please advise...

Haven't tried it yet, but take a look at the various reviews listed on Te Mata's site (temata.co.nz) & see whether there's anyone there you rate (Halliday, Hooke, Martin ... ) & at Geoff Kelly's reviews where he has the '07 just a shade ahead of the '05 ... http://geoffkellywinereviews.co.nz/inde ... icleID=158

12x 2007 Esk Valley Black Label Mer/Cab/Malb. Second purchase of this good QPR wine that I buy by the case as my "I want wine tonight but cannot justify dipping into the good stuff". Currently drinking 04 release. 07 such good vintage figure get this, and forget 08 vintage.
6x 2006 Villa Maria Reserve HB Merlot. Cellar stock up.
May succumb any day now to the nagging thought no 2007 Coleraine in cellar........

I'm not one to be spouting "best ever". There are several vintages of Coleraine you could put forward for that honour. These type of accolades seem to occur every second year for every single wine. However the 2007 is extremely good and every bit as good as the 2005. I also think it has awesome cellaring potential and a must buy for lovers of the coleraine style.

I made only my 2nd purchase of super premium aussie shiraz for the year to add to my 04 St Henri, I grabbed a couple of bottles of 04 Rockford BP Shiraz. Hopefully it lives up to the forum hype I have seen :D

Trying to build up stocks for my upcoming Southern Rhône style Challenge in November. And a visit last weekend to the Mornington Peninsula resulted in only two buys. Had a lot of trouble finding anything to really like. Still can't pass up the grenache or Eden Valley shiraz.
