Which Rockford BP Shiraz vintage to buy-1998, 1999 or 2002?

All the same price at £295/12 + UK tax. So the 1998, 1999 or 2002? Thanks.

I prefer both the '98 and '99 to the '02 - the '99 for a longer term proposition due to structure.

99 (savoury earthy) then 98 (plum/berried) then 02 (big and porty)

Haven't tried the 2002. Still in the cellar. For drinking sooner then the 98. Love it. The 99 is made of sterner stuff and I would give it a few more years before hoeing into them. Ask if you can mix them or find someone to split the cases with :)

I'm not as big a fan of the 99 as others are. The 98 is clearly the best of that trio for my tastes.

I had a 2002 the other weekend and was a bit disappointed. Not quite there yet. I would go the 1998 definately.....

The 99 is toooo savoury for my tastes. I buy the 98, then the 02.
When not drinking a fine red, I'm a cardboard claret man!

Thanks for the comments everyone. As usual I've not made my mind up (although I think I'll pass on the 2002), but I was looking at the 2008 JO annual and he and he gives a drinking window of 07-11+ for the 1999 & 08-18 for the 1998. I normally think his drinking windows are pretty good with a few exceptions.

Personally I'm happier to drink the (more savoury) 1999 but if I need to drink up in a couple of years I'm not so sure. But reading the comments posted on this thread I feel the 1999 will have the greatest longivity. Or am I wrong? I'm looking at drinking these over a 10 year window.

PS I'm still sitting on a case of the 1996 & a couple of bottles of the 1990 & 1991 so I don't really want a repeat of styles. Thanks for your help on this so far.

Phil,

If you don't want a repeat of styles, then 99 is the go. IMO, the 98 and 99 will have similar longevity - no rush at all to drink them.

Went for the 1999 in the end (also the middle childs birth year), although it was an easier decision as the 1998 had been sold on my return from work today. Thanks all for your input. Cheers...
