August - What have we been buying?

Post by Craig(NZ) »

Nice to read what people try, but it is what we buy that step changes an accolade to a real recommendation

Tighter times for most. Whether that is reality or just perception who knows but I know I have walked past deals that in the past I would have taken hook, line and sinker. However a quick look at the LL sale the other day garnered a comment to the shop manager "only the crap 30% off??". Strong brands seem to survive. The presumptous need to discount. Plenty of "2004 No Name Reserve Cab Merlot was $40, now $15" type deals around...yawn. My cellar is getting smaller which i am comfortable with

Anyway I start the month with

2008 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay (the stalwart chardonnay label of my cellar). First time for elston I have ever "buyed b4 i tryed" - anyone had a taste yet?? Its always good aint it.
2004 Cloudy Bay Pelorus (need a mid priced sparkling for our blind tasting tonight - NV Lindauer bdb vs 04 CB Pelorus vs NV Tattinger)
2007 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Merlot Cabernet. My house red this winter. At $15 it is insane value.
2006 Penfolds Bin 28. I wanted to not like this wine but it is pretty good and should be even better in a couple of years. At $17.50 it was enough to force a buy.

Took advantage of the ludicrous Australia/NZ arbitrage to pick up a couple of bargains in Wellington:

1x 2005 Wynn's John Riddoch for NZ$80
2x 2006 Penfolds Bin 389 for NZ$38 (duty free).

I was also offered a discount on the NZ$550 badge price of a 2004 Grange but budgetary constraints prevented me from exploring exactly how far I could have pushed it. Given the exchange rate I reckon it's plausible that I could have got it inside A$400.

Wow, I saw the Meo-Camuzets on the July thread, and I thought Noice...

Seeing this, I'm thinking Noicey Noice...

It's all about the follow through isn't it.

I noticed a couple of 04 white burgs there. Was this a good white burg vintage? I mean as opposed to the 04 red burgs, which weren't that great right?

Cheers,

Monghead.

I wouldn't buy them at Australian retail prices ... yes, 04 is great, better than 05 and 06 for whites. 07 might be even better, and 08 very good too.

04 reds can be quite lovely, and bargains too. Good to drink while you let 05s, 06s, 07s, 08s rest ...

True - Aus retail is getting stupid, taxes and the practices and markups of some importers are not helping.

I've heard elsewhere 07 whites are something special.

And I'm a fan of the 04 reds. Underappreciated.

I found a cheque account that won't be scrutinised so ordered a case of the 02 Hunter Shiraz from Camp Road Estate (ex Heartland Vineyard) - which I posted about earlier under my still-cancelled previous user account. If it has lasted (and surely they wouldn't sell it CD if not) it will be a bargain at $90/dozen delivered.

I'm keener and keener on Hunter Shiraz so if it tastes ok will order another 4 dozen (where to hide them?) THEN post here for anyone interested.

A beautiful tasting-lunch at Lindemans Hunter Valley was followed by a few tidy discounts. I could only convince the "other half" to let me buy a mixed half-dozen :?

3x Lindemans Coonawarra Limestone Ridge 2005 $35
2x Lindemans Coonawarra Pyrus 2005 $35
1x Lindemans Steven Vineyard Hunter Shiraz 1999 $20

 Score! And here I was feeling guilty earlier today about even contemplating buying without "permission" ;)

A couple of enticing Kemeny's Hidden Labels just to sample with a view to further purchases if all goes well:
- McLaren Vale Basket Pressed Shiraz 2007 (winemaker Frank Mitolo). If this is the Jester or similar, it should be very decent.
- Martinborough Pinot Noir 2008 (winemaker Steve Smith from Craggy Range). Very interested to give it a go.

Well, I have a spouse who barely drinks and the need to anticipate the Rockford Basket Press release.

So in actual fact I need (a) a covert source of funds (b) a place to hide them!

So I have finally been rewarded for my "loyalty" to a major chain wine retailer you will probably have heard of:

2004 Penfolds RWT, 2003 Penfolds St Henri and a case of Becks - total outlay $38 and five loyalty coupons instead of the same retailer's (admittedly somewhat inflated) badge price of $304.
