Jane Brook Cabernet

Post by Rawshack »

Anyone familiar with the wine/producer?

I had a bottle of the 07 Cabernet on Saturday night, and while I don't have my tasting notes to hand, I was really impressed. Be interested to hear if anyone else has any experience of it

I know of the producer. They are somewhat of a quiet achiever over here. Haven't tried that particular wine however.

cheers

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?

Went to the cellar door a couple of years back. Don't usually buy much from the Swan Valley but did get a couple of the 04 Reserve or Block summat Shiraz (can't remember off the top of my head) which must have impressed me at the time. Not had the cab though. One of the better producers in the region I think.

Cheers

I've drunk Jane Brook wines now for about the last 10 years or so. One of the top producers in the Swan Valley. I'm guessing that the wine you tried however, was from one of their vineyards in Margaret River. If I recall corrrectly, it got 95 points from Halliday, so it sounds like you have good taste.

Their other strengths lie in their fortifieds, or if you're after something more esoteric, the gold leaf methode champenoise 8)

I think you are referring to the 2007 Margaret River "Shovelgate Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon. I tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

The Shovelgate Vineyard is located to the east of Margaret River township, about 17km out on Osmington Road. It has a yellow-painted shovel wired to the gate, hence the name.

Planted 10-12 years ago, to Cabernet, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit is reaching maturity and is starting to become more predominant in Jane Brook's wines.

Until a year or two ago, I suspect the producer was blending the younger grapes in with their grapes from other regions including Swan Valley. Perhaps now the Margaret River fruit is starting to stand on its own, and JB are making straight MR varietals as a result.

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
