Wineries doing it tougher in the USA than Australia?

I was reading an article last week about a bunch of wine liquidation websites in the USA that are selling well known brands for 30-70% OFF RRP. These are NOT cleanskins or obscure brands but well known high priced brands that need clearing due to excess stock build up.

One website in particulay lists only one wine everyday until sold out or midnight arrives, whichever comes quickest.

Why aren't we seeing such great deals in Australia? Maybe the wineries aren't doing it as tough as we all think, or maybe I have just missed the sales.

Glen,

There have been some sales, much of it export-labelled stock or cleanskins with reliable pedigree info, some via merchants, some directly from the wineries. Many of them have been listed on my site. ;-) You have always been able to get 20%-30% off RRP at retail on many wines if you know how/where to shop.

I don't know the wines on sale in the USA, but some of the ones on offer here are just ordinary vintages of over-priced wines and are not great value even at 50% off.

There is one site in Australia that does the one wine a day thing, but they are almost all under $20 stuff.

Welcome to the corporate disease. From my experience Australia is infested more than most places with this psuedo reality driven by desire to get ones bonus and "yes man" ass kissing

To reach revenue budgets when volume is a struggle a quick fix is to take price. Then if brand equity doesnt support the price rise you can see discounting or funding back.

Hence I would assume you get the situation in NZ where say Penfolds Bin 28 normal shelf price is higher than it has ever been (>$36) yet discounted to lower than its ever been (<$18 )

Getting both volume and price is sometimes just impossible

Thanks Brian, I fogot to check your site.

It's just that I would have thought there would be some REALLY good bargains out there about now, hopefully around the 50% off bracket. I know the 20-30% rule well. I guess wine retail is probably not affected too much, as most people start eating at home and stop ordering $50-$100 bottles in the restuarants, this means they can buy the same wine at a retail store for 1/4 the price or keep spending what they would've spent in a restaurant in the retail store instead.

Which other places do you have experience of Craig? Apart from NZ obviously. Just curious.

And it is not clear who is kissing whose arse*. Is the "yes man" getting his arse kissed or is he the kisser? Surely that would make him an ass kissing "yes man".
