School Day Gear

Post by monghead »

Looked around for a week day post, but when I scrolled down twice, I realised that no one had started one yet after the long week-end.

I'll kick things off for this week (kind of mid-week)

2004 Will's Domain Shiraz
A delightfully savoury wine! Abit more earthy and rustic like a Hunter shiraz than a Margaret River shiraz. Loved the unexpectedness...

Cheers,

Monghead.

2004 Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir
Lovely aged Pinot.
Bright, floral and feminine, with lifted red cherries, herbs and forest floor, minerally river bed, oak now very well integrated, the spicy finish is now much lessened, the tannins delightful and subdued.
Gorgeous silky, rounded and voluptious mouthfeel.
Excellent wine. 95/100
Singing, but will last for years.

This sounds quite delicious John. Must look out for it. Any experience with the more recent vintages?

Tonight,

Kirrihill Clare Shiraz 2003 Cork
Interesting wine, nice dark plums, liquorice and caramel, but a slight earthy(maybe brett) in the mix. The palate has a smooth not too dry feel, perhaps a touch watery. Drink now

St Henri 2001 Shiraz Cork
A bit said about this Henri vintage, but at the recent DM shiraz expo, I thought it held up quite well against some excellent wines. So I cracked one tonight.
Very dark colour, almost pitch black, for a 8 year old, this is great. Has that Penfolds/Henri nose about it, slightly ripe but restrained and no over the top, Blackberry and slight cigar with a hint of herb and aniseed. On the palate it sits and washs down with a medium dry longish finish. What an excellent wine, leave this 5 years more and it'll be stunning.
Glad too have a couple still left

Cheers All

A couple last night to celebrate Lisa's birthday with friends at a local cafe.

93 Lake's Folly Cabernet Starting to brown a little. Tending to a pinot nose. On the palate, nice plums, very elegant and sensual with a beautiful mouthfeel but probably not much more time left. Maybe just a little lightweight but still delicious. These are definitely at the drink now stage. 92

99 Clarendon Hills Liandra Shiraz A big step up in body and tannins and colour from the Folly. A very different beastie indeed. Cherry, blackfruits and anise dominate with the licorice following through to the back palate. Still some unresolved tannins making it quite the mouthful. After the Folly, I found it a little rough but the quality was there. 91

05 Peel Estate Zinfandel Bigger and darker again. Obviously a lot fresher. If tasted blind, I would have said this was a shiraz. Fruitcake with a spicy pepper finish in that young shiraz way. Great complexity and drinking very well now with a long future ahead of it. Very good indeed. 93

95 Miranda Golden Botrytis Semillon Deep orange colour. Everything I want in an aged sticky. A bit of apricot, a bit of honey, a bit of ginger for interest, luscious palate. All in all, yum. 92
Cheers,
Kris

not strictly school day - Friday night but close enough

Port Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2004
This has certainly come a way since the last bottle. What was previously a fairly rigid rockface of a wine is now much more of a crumbly rockpile, with all manner of curious nooks and crannies for discovery. Potent nose of cola, cherry, forest floor, white pepper, five spice and musk, the palate unloads with a jolly big heft of sarsparilla and plummy fruit and the finish is tingly and enduring 'til the last, quite impressive in it's length. Excellent - it's a shame this is my last, just when it's really kicking into gear and should partner a confit duck salad pretty well.
Cheers
