Wayno, Jay60A,

Thanks for the advice about the '07 Steingarten. However I don't think it will make an appearance here in Edmonton. For one thing I've never seen the Steingarten in Edmonton before. Secondly, it may be an exclusive to a single retail chain as I've only seen it in their stores. And finally, the '06 (the only vintage available, I've checked) doesn't appear to be selling well as it is on sale at all the stores, reduced by 20% from C$44 to $35. Yes, I know that's overpriced.

But when I saw it at one outlet reduced from a more reasonable C$26 to C$21 I jumped at the chance and convinced a couple of friends to pick up a few as well. I told them that this was an Australian Classic and that the back label's claim that the wine would last 20 years was probably no exaggeration.

Actually it wasn't difficult to convince one of the friends about the Steingarten as he had enjoyed the '98 Best's Great Western Riesling that I served him recently and in addition was excited about finding some '03 Annie's Lane that was drinking quite well.

Cheers..............Mahmoud.

See above, 06 for >$30 but still not a bad price for halves. The Wynns BL 03 was good for >$20(750ml) but I haven't tried any Leconfield wine for several years.

Probably a "cellar release" - DM seems to save lesser vintages for them.

i like the idea of 1/2 bottles, nice way to try a wine and then go back for a 750ml if its a good one...dont see many 1/2 bottles in perth though.. i recall on a trip to sydney there outlets seem to have more around.

Loztralia

Oh, and a gift from my boss:

1995 Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz

I understand it's a crap year, so we'll drink that soon.

I would thank your boss as this one is drinking superbly now. open soon and drink with an open mind, ignore the "experts" views. if we all relied on a few experts we would only drink a narrow range of wines.
in a lineup recently the 1995 outshone the 1999 (bretty).
enjoy

My buys:

3 X Leconfield Cab Sav 2003
3 X St Huberts Cab Sav 2001
3 X St Huberts Cab Sav 2002
6 X Yarra Burn Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2006
6 X Grant Burge Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV

Also I produced my receipt and returned 9 wines to DM that I had bought a month ago, asked for store credit and then re-purchased them the next day as they had dropped in price considerably for their annual ‘cellar release clearout sale’ – some had dropped up to $15 per bottle! (With the savings i made I was able to buy some of the above 8) )

Crawford River Riesling 1999 x 12
Crawford River Riesling 2000 x 12
Crawford River Riesling 2001 x 12

Justerini & Brooks had a bin end sale over here in London, this worked out at about $11 AUD a bottle including delivery. Hope the 2000 is still okay, other two vintages should be in prime condition. Also -

Steingarten Riesling 2005 x 12

Not sure if I put any of these in the May buying thread or not so sorry if there are repeats

3* 94 Seppelt Special Reserve Sparkling Shiraz - late release or disgorgement or whatever it is.
4* 06 Mount Mary Cabernets
2* 06 Mount Mary Pinots
Mixed half dozen of Kalleske 07 release reds
6* 05 C J Pask `Declaration` Cabernet-Merlot-Malbec
12* 07 C J Pask `Gimblett Road` Chardonnay

The last two pretty cheap from Grays
Cheers,
Kris

Just curious Kris, what price are the Quintets on the mailing list? Is the Pinot more expensive?

Cheers,

Monghead, Both the quintets and the pinot are $100 each off the mailing list. They've always been the same price. And the Chardy and the triolet are always the same price. I think it was up to $70 this year for the whotes.
Cheers,
Kris

Picked up a bottle of the '05 SRL from Regional on the strength of the comments around the tasting (which I'm disappointed I had to miss out on) -- worth noting that Regional's on-line pricing is quite a bit sharper than their in-store pricing, though I presume they'd offer the former to instore buyers -- SRL was $140 on the shelf / $127 (or so) on line.

Other recent purchases:

- mixed case of latest Felton road releases ('08 Block 3 PN, '08 Cornish Point, '08 regular PN and '08 riesling)

- case of Neudorf '08 Moutere Riesling

- 6 x Clearview '08 Reserve Chardonnay

- 6 x Clearview '07 Reserve Cab Franc

An expensive month -- have also now bought:

- 6 x Craggy Range Le Sol (couldn't resist at $75)

- 3 x Suduiraut 2005 (40% less at auction than I paid en primeur)

- 2 x Guiraud 1997

- 2 x Craggy Range Syrah 2007 (a definite step up over '06)

... & am contemplating the Bell Hill mailer ... $95 for the '06 Pinot ...

Cheers

Havent seen this for sale yet. I thought on release the 06 was weak, as I did the sophia but they have both improved out of sight. maybe they are released a little too early?? At $25 on special at the mo, the 06 is just so much class for the buck (its getting better and better). will have to look out for the 07.

07 is really looking a stellar hawkes bay red vintage. Definitely at a aggregate level more exciting top class red wines than any vintage since 98.

Im going to a craggy tasting on wednesday so will let you know what i think after a formal tasting

Tasted the '06 and '07 Syrahs alongside each other at an instore Craggy tasting at Regional today -- '07 was markedly more concentrated. (Didn't buy the Le Sol there -- 74.50 on 6 pack buys at Moore Wilsons, who were also doing Sophia at 46 for a single bottle buy.)

Good prices. I paid $85 for Le Sol (single). not much fuss up here over the Block 14. First ive even heard of its release. Your comments another pointer to the quality of the 07's. gonna have to grab a few more before they disappear I think.
