TN: 2004 Elderton Command Shiraz

Post by Anonymous »

Had this on Sunday at the DM Shiraz expo and rated it the second best on the day behind the 2004 grange. I had a few that day and thought I'd try it whilst sober to see if it was as good as I thought.

In the glass it sat like a black hole-real dark... purple ink all the way to the very edge of the glass.

Big spicey oak nose with cooked meats chocolate, cigar box and a hint of cloves.

Opulent palate of rich plumb, spices (including a nice cumin spice), chocolate, jubes and vanilla oak. A full weighty palate with bold yet integrated tannins a long finish with a hint of bacon and cookie dough.

Still has a way to go (3-4 years) in the bottle and will drink well for the next decade and a half.

Was great with spicy Italian meatballs in a rick tomato sauce. If it wasn't second on the day of the tasting it was surely a top five contender.

I think we had the 05 or 06 in Perth and it was widely agreed as being in the top few of the tasting. Brilliant all round wine, was drinking superbly on the night but had hallmarks of a classic future. My first taste of command but certainly won’t be last

I wasn't sure which I had at the tasting either so I asked the wine dude at my local DM. He thought it was the 04 because he hadn't taken delivery of the new 05 vintage. To be sure he rang the DM where the tasting was held and it was the 04. So it was probably the 04 or the new 05 you had in perth.

It was definitely the 2006 that was on tasting in SA.

Pretty sure the '05 just got released so I doubt it was the '06 (but could be wrong!).
