I've seen a fairly glowing Jeremy Oliver note but love to hear some others if they are out there...
I have had it before and while I do prefer straight cab in general, it was very refined, well balanced and a great example of its variety. Did it blow me away (98 points)? Not really but I do recall it being very youthful and restrained which is why I haven’t opened up my other two bottles since. Reckon it could get there. The last 96 I drunk was superb and did have a wowish factor but I think the 98 had a bit of power yet to show. Might try again soon I think.

Darker and sweeter nose than the previous wine, with richer fruit and more florals, earthier with some mineral, parsley and graphite characters. The palate was less impressive, slightly riper fruit but much shorter in length and depth in comparison. Initially I preferred this bouquet to the Tuscan while that wine had a clear edge with its palate, but eventually the Italian won out there too.
It was really outclassed by the Frescobaldi & Irvine either side of it - maybe it wasn't a great bottle, but on that form I'd lean towards trying one now.
which 94 this was the last year of the ''reserve'' label. I have a 94 reserve in the cellar and dont know when to drink it
It was the straight cab not reserve. Yes it is the last reserve made and I too wonder how that’s going considering the regular was incredible. I would guess that it would be starting to come into its drinking faze but still have loads left. That said, am happy to ask Keith’s (wine maker) opinion when I’m down there next weekend about the 94 and 91 reserve and let you know.

I have some of the 2001 Merlot tucked away. Have you tried this one recently in your travels?

I bought a couple of these, and based on the one I opened a few months ago, I'm not in any hurry to open the other. Don't have any TN on it, but I remember I held a memorial service for the fruit, which had passed away some time ago.
That response is a bit confusing? It either confirms GraemeG's comments or almost completely contradicts them. I'll open the bottle I have soon, post my impressions, as I think the winery's drinking window only gave it another year or so.

It's contadictory, but I honestly thought anyone with any sense would treat it with the respect it deserves - none.
I'm starting to suspect that this board is a shirt and tie affair...

Can't recall tasting this particular vintage of the merlot, however, my experience over a fair few other vintages, is that it's a remarkably long-lived wine, and seemingly only comes into its own after many years - the 1990 (fist ever vintage of the straight merlot?) and the 1992, both tried in the past year, were magnficent, fully developed, lip-smacking wines, reminiscent of the finest St Emilion or Pomerol.

my tasting note from Nov 2007 "excellent looking cork, 1mm staining. a bit reticent on opening, but coming out of its shell now - not overdone in any way, decent honest warm climate shiraz without excessive oak or ripeness or alcohol (14%). 3 hours on, liking this more and more, it’s blossoming, much richer and more giving now, with a lovely long mouthfeel."
Didn't like it as much 2nd day though.

Unfortunately I found this wine overly Bretty and not pleasant at all. You may get lucky and have one that has been stored quite cold and the Brett hasn't bloomed.
