Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mouvedre

Post by Noel ward »

I've noticed that through the Wine Society they are flogging a Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mouvedre 2006. Does anyone have any tasting notes? Is this a one off or have there been previous Bin 2's?

Penfolds made some very good shiraz mataro's in the 1960's apparently. Made it intermitently during the following mid-70's onwards until starting it up again in the 2000's

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?

I thought this was a Cellar door wine.

I thought it was export only when it was made in the 90's?

Yeah. It was pretty much export market only (ie. UK), although the occasional bit has surfaced at Penfolds CD. With their current export problems I expect a bit more may pop up in future...

I know Penfolds have built their name on multi regional blends, but the moment the words 'shiraz' and 'mataro' (mourvedre) are used together, I think of Clare. Does anyone know where the grapes for this wine come from?
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

According to Penfolds ROP it's multi-regional (SA/Victoria, usually Barossa, Clare, Mclaren Vale & Langhorne Creek - doesn't mention where the Victorian bits are from). First introduced in 1960 to the local market, then discontinued during the white wine boom with the remainder sent to the UK with the last two 1980/81 vintages where it found a niche (and a life) overseas. It was reintroduced in 1988 and sold retail in markets other than Australia, deliberately made as an early-drinking style vinified in stainless steel and aged for a year in 5-6 year old hogsheads and larger vats.

Cheers,
Ian

I'm not a pro, I'm an amateur (in the words of Sharon Stone in 'Basic Instinct') - and an enthusiastic one at that!

Cheers,
Ian

Ps. I haven't corrected the spelling of Mourvedre in the heading yet either
