Drinking just one glass of wine a day can INCREASE risk of cancer by 168%, finds shock new study.
Drinking even a single glass of wine a day can increase the risk of cancer by 168 per cent, a shocking new French study has found.
Researchers in Paris have destroyed the myth that drinking moderate amounts of red wine can be good for the health.
Instead, experts at the country's National Cancer Institute have warned that even repeated small doses of alcohol can massively increase the risk of getting cancer.
The Institute's president Dominique Maraninchi said: 'Small daily doses of alcohol are the most harmful.
'There is no amount, however small, which is good for you.'
Even drinking one unit of alcohol per day - a glass of wine, half a pint of beer or a single measure of spirits - can send the risk of mouth or throat cancer soaring by a massive 168 per cent.
It can also raise the risk of colonic cancer by nine per cent.
The study said alcohol was now the second most avoidable cause of death after tobacco.
The findings contradict numerous other studies which have found that the antioxidants in red wine actually reduced the risk of cancer, and that a single glass a day was also good for the liver.
A separate study last year published in the medical journal Neurology said those who drank modest amounts of alcohol developed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, at an 85 per cent slower rate than those who did not drink.
Britain is the tenth biggest drinking nation in the world, consuming around 12 litres of pure alcohol per person per year - the equivalent of three glasses of wine every day.
Luxembourg consumes the world's most, at 16 litres per year, ahead of Ireland, Hungary and Moldova, all on around 14 litres.
France is in 17th place, on around 11 litres of pure alcohol per year, according to World Health Organisation figures.
The same study also found that eating more than 500g (1.2lbs) of red meat can also raise the risks of colonic cancer, and that excessive levels of salt raise the risk of stomach cancer.
The report added: 'Cancer is dependent on many factors, and there is no miracle diet that remove the risks.
'But eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and doing regular physical exercise has been proven to reduce the risks dramatically.'

I might give up on the Listerine though.
Now now, I work for J&J & make Listerine

The NSW Cancer Institute published a report on this issue last year. In essence, it is true, but the Daily Mail have been selective and sensationalist. It is important to note that if you dramatically increase your risk of getting a relatively rare cancer (mouth, throat), your absolute risk is usually still low. If you moderately increase your risk of getting a relatively common cancer (e.g.colon), that is more of a worry. I will try and find the link to the Cancer institute's report.
Here it is, for those who are interested:

In the immortal words of Smokey Robinson, "I second that emotion". Vile gutter rag, better known as the "Daily Heil", with a proud tradition of waving the flag for Adolf Hitler in the English speaking world until about ten minutes before the war.
'Secret documents released from British Foreign Office intelligence files have revealed that the wartime proprietor of the Daily Mail newspaper, Lord Rothermere, sent a series of supportive and congratulatory telegrams to Nazi leaders, including Hitler, just months before the country went to war with Germany in 1939.
In the summer of 1939, Rothermere was appealing to Hitler’s foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop: "Our two great Nordic countries should pursue resolutely a policy of appeasement for, whatever anyone may say, our two great countries should be the leaders of the world."
Shortly before Rothermere had written to Hitler: "My Dear Führer, I have watched with understanding and interest the progress of your great and superhuman work in regenerating your country."'

Everything is bad for you. Everything is good for you. I wouldn't spend any time worrying about it - that's what will put you in an early grave, not the plonk.
Wine is bad for you, milk is bad for you, cars are bad for you, TV is bad for you, world travel is bad for you, running is bad for you, chocolate is bad for you, scuba-diving is bad for you, pregnancy is bad for you, marriage is bad for you, being single is bad for you, working is bad for you, not working is bad for you, meat eating is bad for you, vegeterianism is bad for you, even oxygen is bad for you. Kill yourself now and get it over with... or not. Drink, eat, do some exercise, take risks, be happy and live until you're 90 odd, at which point you'll keel over because we all have to die of something.

From a cursory look at a web-site, "throat cancer" seems to refer to mouth, lungs, and trachea.
The incidence for men in Australia was 62 new cases per 100,000 in 2002.
Therefore, the general population, not accounting for age and other risk factors, has a 1 in 1612 chance of contracting one of these cancers.
The chance increases to about 1 in 1000 if you drink, if the risk increases by 168%.
Of course the causes of these cancers are complex, and in fact, talking about risk in this way is useful from a public health point of view but not an accurate way of predicting what the consequences of an individual's choices will be.

"Throat Cancer" usually means pharynx, larynx and sometimes oesohagus. It usually doesn't refer to trachea and I have not seen it refer to lung. If you are referring to the Daily Mail "throat cancer" could mean anything. Lung cancer is more common than these others.
Epidemiological data can't and never will be able to be used to confidently predict individual outcomes. They do however represent the best basis currently on which to make both individual and public health decisions.

Don't blame the Daily Mail this time, blame Professor Maraninchi of the French National Cancer Institute. You should know that a strong anti-alcohol Political Correctness has developed in France and there is a body of Public Health Fascists which seems determined to stamp out the French gastronomic and wine culture. Disinformation and distorted reporting is part of the armoury of these people. Of course, their equivalents in the UK are happy to join the bandwagon.
Roscoe, thanks for that link. At first sight, that report looks much more balanced but maybe sensational headlines could be made from it, as well.
There is a law in France, la loi Evin, which restricts publicity in favour of drink, particularly on television. I therefore doubt whether Prof. Maraninchi's pronouncements will get much public rebuttal.
