What would you buy?
I've been saving my penny's and have around $500 to spend on wines for myself this Christmas.
I have a reasonable cellar of around 300 wines mainly in the $20 - $30 range. I enjoy all wines white and red.
I am thinking of buying an iconic type wine such as a Run Rig and spending the rest on $50 - $80 dollar wines - Wynn's Michael, Mt Langi Ghiran LAS Chardonnay etc.
What would you guys spend it on?

I'm like a broken record with this one but I absolutely adore the 2002 Houghton Jack Mann. Generally hovering at or just over the $100 mark but I'm sure it can be had for less. It's just sumptuous, a real luxury feeling about it. I'd drink it every night if I could and there aren't many I'd say that about.

2004 Penfolds St Henri
2005 Seppelt St Peters
2005 LEAS Chardonnay
2006 Paringa Estate Pinot Noir
2004 Voyager Estate Cab/Merlot
Mt Pleasant Lovedale Semillon
2005 Balnaves The Tally CabSav
Morris Premium Tokay
Should be some change out of $500
Much more fun than a Runrig and a couple of others. If you want a SV get a Yarra Yarra SV or Yering Station Reserve SV.

I would ditch the Runrig (too expensive) and buy -
2 x Henscke Tappa Pass 2005 $60 each
1 x Clonakilla Shiraz Viongier (any vintage) $80
2 x Grosset Watervale 2008 Riesling $35 each
1 x Best bin 0 shiraz 2005 $50
1 x Craggy Range sophia 2005 $75
1 x Vieux Telegraphe CNDP 2005 $125
keep your cellar interesting and your palate shall keep evolving. but thats just my opinion....
enjoy your spending!

Just for something a bit different, have a look at Blue Poles Hopping Stone Tempranillo 07 ($22). It's a very food-friendly wine from my experience. With Christmas just around the corner, Mark's recommendation of matching it with smoked ham seems entirely appropriate. Haven't tried the Blue Poles Allouran Merlot Cabernet Franc 06 ($25) yet but I've seen some praiseworthy comments about the 05. I'm thinking of trying it against a Tahbilk Cabernet Franc 07. Similarly, I'll compare the Hopping Stone to a Tahbilk Tempranillo 07 when I get around to it.
Yeah, I know, Tahbilk, Tahbilk, Tahbilk, but it's one of my benchmark wineries for the varietal character of it's wines, terroir of course a factor.
Cheers

Wandered the isles of Dan M's picking up bottles and putting them back for an hour and finally walked out with -
2 Tahbilk Eric Stevens Purbrick Shiraz 2002
2 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz 5005
2 Torbreck Struie Shiraz 2006
2 Houghtons Wisdom Cab Sav 2005
2 De Iuliis Show Reserve Shiraz 2007
So many wines so much indecision.
No real reason for the selections. They all seemed like the right one at the time.
