'Doctor' Vineyards

Post by Quizmaster »

As a follow up thread to the Quiz, I wonder just how many wineries were originally founded by doctors? I’ll start with a couple of obvious names in addition to those of the quiz, there are many more, care to add to the list?

Minchinbury
Dr Charles McKay purchases 'Minchinbury' in 1859 and plants the first vines during the 1860's. He also had the original winery constructed on the site. Later to be sold to Penfolds.

Magill
Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold, bought the 500 acre Magill estate in the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, four miles from Adelaide--the house was called Grange Cottage.

Sackville Reach
Dr Thomas Henry Fiaschi plants 5 acres of vines in 1882 at Sackville Reach, in 1887 he built a winery, calling it 'Tizzana'.

Tea Tree Gully
Dr. Angove's initial plantings at the township of Tea Tree Gully in the Adelaide foothills were the forerunner of one of the largest vineyards in the southern hemisphere - the Nanya Vineyard at Renmark in South Australia's Riverland.

Dr James Bowman's 'Lyndhurst Estate' at Glebe in 1823 was reported to have extensive vineyards in the estate gardens.

Richmond Estate
Dr Barry Bracken established the estate on the outskirts of Sydney in 1967.

Cawarra
Dr Henry J Lindeman planted his first vineyard on his 330-acre property ‘Cawarra’ in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales in 1843.

Dr Robert Townson – cultivated muscatel at Bunbury Curran near Campbelltown around 1800.

Dr R M Schomburgk – planted a small vineyard in 1857 at Buchfelde west of Gawler on the Para River.

Dr Alexander Charles Kelly – ‘Trinity’ near Morphett Vale in the early 1840’s, went on to purchase a property in McLaren Vale naming it ‘Tintara’.

Dr Kevin Cullen - who the Cullen chardonnay is named after from 2006. Husband of Diana Madeline (who the Cab Merlot is named for).
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

There are actually dozens of them here in WA but I am too lazy to google them all to get the correct christian names so I will leave that list to others.

If I recall rightly Philip Norrie wrote a book on the influence on doctors in the Australian wine industry. Not too sure if it was state specific or Australia-wide though.
