Presuming you mean the other major Austrailian wine forum, that's just their version of having fun (apart from the cork luddites thread, that's just way over the top from any rational explanation).

I think the cost of top Burgundy and Champagne is wearing them down. Hence the anger. BurgHound becomes BurgAddiction imo.

I was going to say (in jest) that it stems from drinking too much foreign wine and not enough good old Aussie wine, but deleted it in case they didn't believe I was joking.

How could you say that. YOU must be some sort of raving idiot. It is quite clear that stuffed rags secured by red wax bound by number 8 fencing wire is THE method of closure!!

Starwine is a long defunct (I hope) sparkling sweet white.

I'll let rocknoise clarify which forum he's talking about.

That said, it's great that there are several available fora which those with similar interests in wine can exchange opinions and experiences. Boccacio has a lean towards italian wines, *Forum has a mix, some with a bent toward french wines, Auswine is rather more eclectic but with an emphasis on Australian wines (suits the name) and although it's in a different format, The Wine Front is another that provides an avenue to comment on the wines reviewed and is another informative wine site. There are of course others but mostly with limited or no interactive facility.

Anyway, I'm comfortable here, happy to see there's been a bit of increased activity, new members generating some interest, including Lordson's exploration of wine (which mostly seems about reds).

Cheers

Yeah - it's nice to see lots of new people here. fwiw if you are really francophile I'd read the UK Wine Forum where you can learn about French Wine at prices you can *actually* afford ... Gigondas, Loire, S. France etc. Excellent moderation (Tom S.).

I'm waiting for kiwiwineclubforum where you can only post on SavBlanc and maybe Waiheke and HB Syrah and Clevedon blends naturally.
Nah, it's nice here and people are generally very friendly.

Now that is a great way to get really p*ssed off as a wine drinking Australian, read the overseas prices. I am on the Wallys in LA email list and a few other US retailers' lists. Last week I was offered Pichon Lalande 05 at $135. Here in Aus with our wonder system of taxes, it is over $300! Some days this country is so corrupt with the kick backs from Brewers to the local political parties ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I can fly to Auckland with the wife, stay at the Hilton, pick up a six pack of Grange, come home and still be ahead of buying the same 6 bottles locally. Now that is just plain wrong!

NO! I am not a francophile! But at ~$20 I could be tempted to try a Guigal Cotes du Rhone, a label that seems to reasonably well-regarded by the cognoscenti.

Couldn't be bothered trying NZ reds, their shiraz/syrah and cab sauv seem to be mostly overpriced - and I'm not a pinotphile.

I find enough variation in Australia's GIs etc to be happy enough drinking exclusively Aus wines. Seriously. Even then, I don't bother with Qld or Hunter wines. It's not jingoism or anything like that, it's just that I really am content to drink only Australian wines.

Perhaps the best wine I've had this year was The Story Westgate Grampians Shiraz 06 (A$38-A$40) - it certainly doesn't fit the mould of Barossa or McLaren Vale shiraz'. Another that's very close behind it is Polleters (Moonambel/Pyrenees) Cab 05 and at A$25 is an absolute bargain. Both are from cooler Victorian regions and are "boutique" wine producers, perhaps none more so than The Story - apparently there were only about 70 cases of the Westgate bottled and I'm amazed that it can still be found! Forest Hill Vineyard at Great Southern/Mount Barker is another smaller producer (20,000 cases) whose wines I've really enjoyed this year, particularly the Block series wines. Jeanneret Denis Reserve Shiraz 02 from Clare is another I've particularly enjoyed. Mornington Peninsula is a region from which I'd like to try some shiraz - I've enjoyed a few chards from there.

My preferences in Australian wines seems to have generally moved to those from cooler climates with some elegance and there are many smaller wineries producing excellent wines that I've yet to try.

Cheers

In answer to the original question "everyone seems so angry on this other forum I looked at. What's up over there?", and assuming we're talking *forum, I think it might have attracted some people with bigger wallets than me, and are a little more opinionated as a result. Maybe they have reason to be, based on their tasting experience, etc, etc.

I don't care. I'm here (and there) because I want to talk to people about a subject I am passionate about, at my level. I learn from people that have different experiences to me, who have been far more involved in the industry than I have, and even from those that can afford the time to post their tour diaries of pie-shops (sorry TORB  ). For me, this forum is the goods, while the other forum doesn't have the same level of appeal for me - because it is not (as much) at my level of interest.

Yes, I have a few French in the cellar, but I don't understand enough about French wines (yet) to discuss them with any confidence (apart from my TNs). It's an area I want to explore, but I'm also very satisfied exploring the variety that Australia has to offer. As I've explored this wide brown land (and many of its wine regions, across 5 states and a territory), and worked in the industry on a couple of levels, I feel my opinion on Australian wines is far more valid than for French (or any other country's) wines, and therefore I'll keep talking :P

But I'll do it on both fora (thanks Daz for the Latin plural), in the knowledge that a few people like me will do the same. In the meantime - thanks Gavin - Auswine is the go :D

Cheers

Allan

Not trying Kiwi reds is crazy. They clearly make the best Pinot Noirs in this part of the world. Sure there are some great Aus , Main Ridge etc, but pinot for pinot NZ wins hands down. I also believe the Stonyridge Larose from a good year is the most complex and interesting Bordx blend down under. I have put up good vintage SL bottles against Mt Mary and Moss Wood and time and time again I will reach for the SL over both of these. Close but that is my preference.
