June - What have you been buying?
Craig's been a bit slack about posting his "what have you bought" thread for last month , so I figured I'll kick it off. Where did your hard-earned money go in June?
For my part its been fairly quiet, but I picked up the following:
4x Felton Road Riesling 07
4x Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 07
3x Church Road Reserve Chardonnay 06
2x Church Road Reserve Cab/Merlot 05
4x Kalleske Clarry's 07
6x Corallo Nero d'Avola 06
How about you?

I bought 6 of these, plus 3 Villa Maria Res Syrah 06 and 3 Passage Rock Res Syrah 06 as a trial of purchasing direct from NZ while the AUD is high. They arrived last week, but I'm waiting for the NZ-born member of my Monday tasting group to come back from holidays before we try them.

Hardly a thing, post-surgery non alcoholic mood - but the drought is breaking ever so slowly.
D'Arenberg Cadenzia 2005
D'Arenberg Peppermint Paddock NV
D'Arenberg Noble Riesling 07?
Henschke Henry's Seven 06
just scratching around the surface really, which is a nice feeling for the credit card.

You're not kidding. I've got the syrah on my wish-list too, and will defo get some more cab/merlot and perhaps viognier when I next see them on special at the supermarket, too. Pak-n-Save tend to have CR reserves at low prices now and then.
My buying is also being stunted by the upcoming purchase of the super-premium 08 Salle de Bains Nouveau

As is increasingly the way for me, quite a few purchases of 1-3 bottles rather than 6 packs (or a dozen). Surprisingly more shiraz + chardonnay than i would have expected:
1 x Masi Camporfiorin Ripasso 2004
1 x Pontet Canet 2004
1 x Villa Terlina Gradale Barbera d’Asti 2004
3 x Faiveley Mercurey 'Clos Des Myglands' 2005
3 x Hoddles Creek Chard 2007
1 x Hoddles Creek Chard 2006
2 x Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2007
3 x Devil's Lair Chard 2006
1 x Tyrrell's Vat 9 2007
5 x Tyrrell's 4 Acre 2007
1 x Meerea Park Hell Hole Shiraz2006

12 x Marsanne from Tahbilk (2 each of 2002-2007 vintages - great value)

12 x Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz '05 (6 left!)
I'm thinking about Kalleske Johann Georg '06 but have yet to see anyones houghts on this wine. $100+ a pop is too much to just take a punt on.

Apart from renowned tasters who don't pay for them, who else can afford to taste $100+ wines before buying? I take a punt on a bottle of Tahbilk 1860s Vines from highly rated vintages without tasting so what the hell, just buy a bottle of the JG and cellar it until the minimum year of the recommended drinking window!

These are recent purchases but not sure if they were all in June or if I've posted some of these before.
6 * 05 Petaluma Cabernet
6 * 06 Wynns Black Label
6 * 06 Kalleske shiraz
1 * 06 Kalleske Johann George
2 * 06 Kalleske VP
3 * 06 Kalleske Lorraine Semillon (Late Harvest)
12 * mixed pack of Warabilla Wines
6 * 05 Penfolds Bin 389
6 * NV Charles Heidseck mis en cave champange
2 * NV Moet Champange
6 * 06 Majella Cab Sav
3 * 06 Majella Musician
3 * Majella Sparkling Shiraz
A few rare and grand muscats and tokays as reported in my rutherglen post
Some mixed moscatos including innocent bystander (why are they in such small bottles???), emeri, a cleanskin and some others I can't remember.
There was probably something else I can't remember either.
No wonder I've got no room in my cellar.

I'd be really keen to hear your opinions on these three Brian, and I think you've chosen really well. I have tried all 3 and I believe that along with CR Le Sol and TH Homage these are the best NZ syrahs yet made. While they are different in style to the some of the Parkerized Ozzie 'ooze-monsters' I believe they hold their own with some of the better classical shiraz from Australia. Be interested to hear what you think.
Cheers

Rob, don't hold your breath, it will be a month before I get to them when I come back from a holiday and the NZ-born member of one of my tasting groups comes back from his trip O/S.

Id also add Bilancia La Collina to the list. The 06 is gorgeous, classy and refined, The sister wines to the Villa Reserve (Esk Reserve and Vidals Reserve) would compete hard among themselves. Style preference would declare a winner. Personally I think i just prefer the Vidals and Esk style though the Villa is a super wine to enjoy earlier - super texture and softness. The 06 Passage Rock Reserve is very good, maybe half a notch behind the best. I think the 05 will better it at the 5 years mark?? Seems more a cellar prospect, the 06 is a bit more rhone like, slightly lighter and more floral immediately approachable. The 05 Passage Rock is a monster and a statement. I also like the 06 Unison Syrah. This wine seems to improve every year. I also really like the 02 Le Sol even given its reputation as a big 'aussie' copy. The 05 is ok but didnt excite the $$ out of the wallet. Havent tried the 06 yet.
I rate the cellar ability of many of these wines too. The seem to have density of fruit and stuffing which NZ bdx blends fail to have in the main The 02 Craggy Le Sol must look good to last 20 years?
They are the recent Syrah's ive enjoyed the most

The 06 Steading, asbence of the usual fragrant aroma from Torbreck, smells with a hint of spices, berries, mould (forrest floor)
the wine itself is lean, and the after taste is virtually non existent perhaps at best 10-15 seconds.
Tried the second night and day after still consistently lean, weak and unattractive, open another bottle 10 days later same as the first.
a disappointing wine indeed.
I'm a long term fan of Torbreck, from woodcutters red to decendant and run rig, in fact run rig is one of my top favourites never have a bad one from this vinter. except this time!

Boyeah

I 100% agree with this TN -" lean and weak" - sums it up for me

Thanks guys. Steading is a personal fave and is on the buying radar. You would think 06 being a strong vintage that it would be a good drop. Strangely the Teusner Avatar in 06 isn't as good as the 05 either. Perhaps while 06 was good to shiraz it wasn't so good for grenache/mataro...

Mike,
Going long on BP '02. Was it showing well, an act of faith, or cheap?
More than academic interest. I bought 8 recently on pure faith.

Indeed, that took me a bit by surprise as well. Quite the cache. I have interestingly heard some mixed stuff about the 02. I have but 2 of them and was considering opening one soon to test out the word on the street.
