Going to Tassie...where should I go?

Post by pokolbinguy »

G'day folks,

I am heading to Tassie for a few days and wondering where I should visit.

Thanks.

I presume you are talking wine related experiences?

Don't make the common mistake of looking at a map and thinking Tassie is tiny so you can go to lots and lots of regions because they look close together. Apart from the highway between Launceston and Hobart most of the roads are not easy driving. Lots of hills and lots of bends. Places that are 60k apart as the crow flies can be 80 - 90 K of fairly low speed driving.

Where are you actually going and do you want general tourist hints, cellar door hints or dining hints?

We are planning to stay one night in Hobart. That night eat out and planning to go to "The Chaser's" Show at the royal?.

We have been down there before and only have about 4 days.

Arrive sat night leave wed morn.

Was planning to go to Moorilla estate to check out there pinot and also they have a brewery now there aswell (moo brew). Also go to the bay of fires.

The plan really is to just eat and drink ourselves silly for the few days...short but sweet. Hopefully cram in some crayfish on the coast :D

Is myself and my father going so serious food and wine is on the agenda.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers, Brett

If you are going to the Bay of Fires, stay out at Binnalong Bay. One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Also, eat at a place called Angasi. Good food, and a pretty good wine list. Other than that, some good advice is to just cruise along at a relaxed pace...
Never enough Pinot........but now I have found shiraz

I agree about Moorilla although I do like their Gewurtz. The restaurant is good from the one experience I had 12 months ago. Great setting.

Schouten House at Swansea on the East Coast used to be v good.

I have not heard one person recommend the cellar door experience at Freycinet Vineyard.

Home Hill in the Huon Valley is good.

In Hobart if you want to go BYO I recommend Le Provencal in Sth Hobart but BYO glassware. Marque IV is probably the best Hobart Restaurant. Prossers for seafood.

In Launceston I like Fee& Me. Stillwater is supposed to be v good and I have heard some good reports about the food at the Country Club Casino.

Geez, this is a popular question here! Hobart to BoF CD is a very long drive indeed, and there's no guarantee that the wines you want wil be on tasting (or even for sale). For a four day visit, unless you want to do nothing BUT food and drink, I'd stick to Hobart & the East Coast, collecting the Coal Valley on the way through. See Moorilla, sure, but visit Lubiana as well. Go to Domaine A too, and try to get to Hood wines when they're open ont he weekend. Needn't bother with Meadowbank unless you're hungry. Haven't visited the East Coast for years, but there as some respected wineries there now. Also, search this forum for "Tasmania." There are a lot of useful posts (*ahem* - modest cough) on many areas of the state.
And take note of Ratcatcher's tip on the roads...
cheers,
Graeme

One final comment. Don't think that Tassie is only Pinot & Riesling.

The 2005 & 2006 vintages were pretty good and are just being released. Some of the Cabernet wines would be worth a try.
