January - What have you been buying??

Post by Craig(NZ) »

Mid month again, time to see what is hot in the world of wine buying among forumites.

It's been quiet over xmas for me. I bought a couple more 06 Kumeu River Mates Vineyard Chardonnay, and still plan another grab before they disappear off the shelves for good.

Also splashed out on a bottle of 04 Puriri Hills Reserve on the strength of a tasting of it just before Christmas to join my cache of 05's

A bottle of 06 Dry River Gewurztraminer joined the back of a queue of vintages I have to knock over.

Also a few cheap bottles of fizz for the season including the bargain Lindaeur Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs which is extremely smart at $12 on special! Have long since demolished them.

Cant see any more purchases this month making priority over paying the Christmas visa.

What has opened your wallet over the past month???

PHI - 2006 Pinot, 2006 Chardonnay, 2007 Sauvignon
Kooyong - 2005 Haven Pinot
Ata Rangi - 2006 Pinot, as many as I could afford
Yalumba - 2006 FDW7C Chardonnay (alas 1 bottle is all I could find)
Cape Mentelle 2006 Chardonnay - as many as I could find
Some 2005 Burgundy - cheapies, but serious 1er cru from "Beaune"
William Downie Yarra 2006 Pinot, tooooo many :)
Hollick 2006 Sparkling Merlot (Coonawara) - just the thing for a warm Adelaide night. Drink now, or, wait at least 5 years. $25
Some more cheap 1er cru Burgundy from Beaune (call me a sucker)

It's too hot here to buy wine, or at least too hot to buy it and have it delivered and I don't even trust wine delivered to some of the local merchants at this time of the year.
Cheers

Speaking of the Kumeu River Mates Vineyard, does anyone know if it's available anywhere in Australia?

The Estate would be fine too, all I can find is the Village.

Do you know, I was standing in Domaine A's cellar door on January 8 and a thought struck me. I was buying wine from my fourth different cellar door already in 2008...

cheers,

in my earlier post i just realise i didn't put the quantity - sorry, here we go again:

1xDe Bortoli Yarra Valley Shiraz Viognier 2005
2xYabby Lake Pinot Noir 2005
2xPeter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 2002
2xBalnaves The Tally Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
2xPikes The Merle Reserve Riesling 2006
1xLeeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2004
2xVasse Felix Heytsebury Chardonnay 2005
2xtorbreck woodcutter 2006 shiraz
3xamherst dunns paddock shiraz

also there's a side story to this :- the wine was ordered during a period when melbourne was experiencing a 40c heat wave, the wine didnt get delivered more than a week later, so 10 pt to the service.
After unpacking the wines in to my wine rack - i realised my hand was stained with red wine - got really worried, as this is my first major wine purchase - and after careful inspection, it was "The Tally" - called the merchant the next day - i was told to open the bottle and it should still be good and drink it, they'll send another one - no further question asked. Excellent service! I corked it last night (as i suspected, it was due to the faulty cork) - wow the wine is still good! Should i call myself lucky? I don't know, as i intend to keep the other two for a little while - i hope the faulty cork is not to the whole batch...i'll post my tasting notes - a wonderful experience

A few 06 Rieslings (1 x each): Felton Road (hard to find now), Palliser Estate and Greenhough Hope Vineyard, as well as an 04 Petaluma riesling.

I had the Greenhough riesling last night - slightly sweet, citrousy, very nice - recommended.

Also stocked up on a few more 04 Saltram Mamre Brook Cab Sauv, a few 06 Mills Reef Reserve Cab/Merlot, and a couple more Stonecroft 05 Syrah.
Cheers,
Mike

Please contact me, Auswine just received an offer of some small parcels of all of these.

Better late than never, I suppose.

Bought a bit of wine in Macedon when I was there a week or two ago.

2x Cobaw Ridge (Chardy and Lagrein)
4 x Granite hills (2xRiesling, Pinot, Shiraz)
2 X Hanging Rock (Pinot, Cab Franc)
1 x Captains Creek (cuvee brut)
2 x Mount Macedon Wines (Reserve Pinot)

Interesting region, worth checking out one weekend if you are Melbourne.

6 x Mount Pleasant OP & OH Shiraz 2002. Will share them with my ex.

Due to nasty case of influenza, I have not felt like drinking/buying over the past fortnight, but found these at a great price.

Head still exploding......

Pound has fallen a lot against the euro recently, so I picked up a case of 2004 Silex from Dagueneau in the sales. Bit of a pain trying to get to the UK and back, but its a wine that will keep, so no hurry.

The wines from the 2007 Cape Winemakers Guild Auction have just arrived in the country and I've ordered:
Cederberg Private Cellar Semillon 2007
Flagstone "The Glass Carriage" (chenin with a touch of sauvignon) Steenberg "The White Savage" 2007 (Sauv/Semillon Blen)

Looking forward to them.

2005 Kupe by Escarpment (2)

1995 La Croix du Casse, Pomerol (1)

2002 Grosset Gaia (2)

2001 Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir (2)

2005 Keith Tulloch Semillon (2)

2003 Masseria Monaci Copertino Eloquenzia (2)

2001 Vesevo Taurasi (1)

plus a couple of odd bottles in Waitrose

Might be interesting to compare the Kupe against a bottle of Martinborough Reserve 1998

Ian,

where did you pick this up from? I wouldn't mind trying it again, and the stuff I own is still back in Oz.

From Halifax wine company http://halifaxwinecompany.com/shop/index.php
The sale (ends saturday 5pm according to the site) list is bang up to date, as they said I had the last two Hamilton Russell Pinot Noirs this week (now showing as sold out). This was the first time I'd used them and it was professionally handled by them - in the post the day we agreed the order & arrived, sensibly and carefully packed the following day, with instructions for delivery clearly showing. Pleasingly faultless from start to finish. I'd buy again from them.

The Keith Tulloch Semillons were a tenner each which isn't as good as Oz IIRC, but I was happy with the price.

Regards

Ian

Half a dozen Rosemount Traditional cab blend 02. Not much around for $12 that can compete on a vfm basis. In Ricspeak, agreeable.

It's varietal enough, the fruit seems a bit confected but there is a cabernet base that shows through, cassis, some licorice, ripe black plums, oak is there but now pretty well integrated. It's already thrown some crust.
