They are sensational wines. I couldn't decide which I preferred out of the 85 and 86 - so I just enjoyed both. I've got some of the 04 but haven't tried it. Given the longevity of the others, I've stashed them away.

There’s nothing in my cellar that about four bites at Langton’s auctions couldn’t easily replace – but you have to spend around 25% more than I have to acquire it! The glory of the cellar is probably nice little handfuls of 96 & 98 vintages of decent South Australian wines: Cyril, John Riddoch, Wendouree Shiraz, Gaia, Polish Hill, that sort of thing. The majority of the last 10 years of Quintet are nice to have, and drink from time to time. I do have one 96 Grange, can’t think when I’ll drink that.

And if you like the Penfolds style (which I do, on the whole) its so pleasant to have older vintages purchased at sensible prices. My Penfolds reds only span from 91 – 04 (mostly 96 & 98), but replacing them at auction would cost roughly twice what I paid for them. Don't even think about retail prices!

There’s a 1970 Lindemans Hunter shiraz which I’m keeping for a few more years, and a novelty might be probably the only bottle of 2001 Friedrich Fuchs Klusserather Bruderschaft Auslese riesling in Australia – a souvenir bottle from a trip back in 2003 and the survivor of a pair we bought at the cellar door in the Moselle.

Nothing’s too precious to drink, however…

Sono Montenidoli (single varital chianti hence no paper collar). I once spent a wonderful holiday at this vineyard. Many great memories are contained in this wine.

Ch. Moulin St Georges 1998 - I tracked down this producer in St Emillion after drinking it in a restaurant in London. Another quest I will never forget.

seems to be almost immortal, have a couple left but every report i get from others indicates it still has years left in it.

its my favourite terraces actually, not as powerful as later vintages, but i kinda like the red fruited nature of the 1995s, and of course it was picked before the 1995 rains so isnt scarred! rare wine now

Wine unfortunately only grabbed me after 30. In hindsight, if only I started earlier too. Wow, the cellar I would have now. It is a very good start for 25 and a great range. I bet your a sandgroper too.

Also what's a sandgroper?

Trumer Pils, Hoogarten and Carlsberg Elephant are examples of premium imported beers. Nice, too. Malt Shovel Brewery's James Squire and Little Creatures ranges are examples of Australian premium beers. Definition of premium beer? That's up to you.

Sandgropers are Western Australians.

i started wine at 25 too. ive still got some of the wines i bought in my first year or so - 94 goldwater, 95 coleraine, 93 st henri, 94 edelstone etc, 94 Amargh, 94 389 etc

it takes a decade to get depth in a cellar unless you spend your life at auctions buying other peoples cast offs. I havent been to an auction for nearly 7 years!

I pretty much live on Langtons these days, but only try and by stuff when it's a bargain. Otherwise I tell them they're dreamin'. Langton's gives me the chance to buy the rarer wines I couldn't find in other places, and enjoy some older wines too. It was good for me to find out if cellaring was actually worth it (it surely was), without having to wait 5-10 years.
As you can now see from my profile I am a Melbournite born and raised, although the prospect of living in WA is certainly more appealing these days.

Complete set of all the Wolf Blass platinum shiraz's 1998-2005 would be the gem in my albetit young cellar.
