TN 2004 Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz

Post by John #11 »

An unexpected pleasure today.

Deep and dark purple ink.
Heady aromas of pepper and spice and plums and dark cherries.
Full-bodied, plums, cherries, blueberries, pepper, and lovely shiraz spice. Tooth coating tannins. Long, powerful, yet elegant, with lovely balance and structure. Just a hint of warmth on the back palate. Very long legs.

Superb. 95+/100 Maybe one of the best.

Screwcap
15% alcohol
$44-55
Drink 2017-2030

In the cool climate shiraz tasting at http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=6684 I thought the 2004 Petaluma shiraz to have outdone the Langi.

I was not completely convinced that the 15% alc on this was sensible.

Within class, I'd chase the 2004 Shaw and Smith, the 2004 Petaluma and the 2005 Mount Majura ahead of this, by some distance.

Both the Shaw and Smith and the Petaluma have Viognier blended in, and this may or may not suit everyone's palate.

I personally prefer to avoid it.

Good luck if people can taste viognier influence in the Petaluma or the Shaw and Smith. The amounts used are at the discrete end of the scale, with the usual brightening and colour fixing benefits. These are anything but apricot reds.

Agree . I'm not convinced by the Langi. Not sure if its the alcohol but there is a heaviness in this wine i didn't expect.

Cheers

I tried the 2004 Langi last week too - riper fruit than I expected, no mint but white & black pepper, well balanced and a long finish. The 15% alcohol seemed to be just in check for now at least - someone said it's a spitting image of a young 1994, but while I liked it I'm not quite sure if it's up there with the best.

The 2004 Cliff Edge looked pretty smart, and good value at $22 on the day.

Cheers,
Ian

Have a go at the Billie Billie Shiraz from Langi. Excellent for the price.

I like this too. I'll re-taste the bottle today to make sure :)
I like it more than the 04 Petaluma anyway which seems a bit too sweet to me.
