Wine storage - acclimatised cupboards/cabinets

Post by FrankA »

Hi

Does anyone know of someone who makes customised and acclimatised wine cabinets please? We have a space in a large hallway which we want to use for wine storage - its about 2m W x 78cm D x 2m H. It's a modern house and ideally we'd like to store it in custom made acclimatised wine cabinets. I have had a look at one company (called Wine Cabinets Australia) however their cabinets are quite decorateive and are more like nice pieces of furniture as opposed to modern sleek wine cabinets. They are also really expensive.

I suppose I could just get a cabinet maker to create cabinets and then I could insulate them with proper stryfoam etc. - however I doubt that'd keep them at a good temp - can you get systems which simply cool cabinets (have seen heaps which cool larger areas, not smallish cabinets).

Any ideas would be appreciated please!
Cheers
Frank.

Hi Frank, I use a cabinet by transtherm which controls temp and humidity. It holds 140 bottles max or 90 using the shelving layout. I tried the insulation way and it doesn't work unless you use a temp controller of some sort.I couldn't find a unit that was for smaller size cellars. Do a google search for wine cabinets. Good luck

This book will tell you how to do it. http://www.winepress.com.au/cellarrw.htm

It's written by Tyson Stelzer, a banana bender, so its all local stuff.

Transthern may look good but are crap. Their best cabinet boiled some serious Ozzie reds because of a cheap thermostat. Go for the book the grey haired guru recommends, it is fantastic ( if you have time and are a DIY). Go Liebherr if you are time poor and want total reliability.
Good luck. Cloudy
