Hi all a query for you do any of you buy cleanskins from bottle shops?
In particular there is a bottle shop in Vic called Uncorked, they buy from wineries and put there GI and variety and sell under own label. i have had a few recently and they have all be excellent in the $10-$20 range for quaffing. particualrly a 2001 Yarra Valley Pinot and a 1999 Mudgee Merlot, now i have no idea who makes or whatever but to take out over christmas i have found excellent balanced, well priced wines. anyone else have experiences with these types of set ups or does everyone steer clear of clean skins?
PS Gavin, if you want to remove the name of the bottle shop in this post i am happy if it conflicts with your own business or is deemed as advertising.

Yes - I buy cleanskins.
I find those in retail stores like VC or First Estate to be terrible and I don't bother. I have found some good ones at Dan Murphy's but these are few and far between. I must taste one before buying any but I find that staff are most willing to open these wines for this purpose. Also found a few good ones at a Porters.
Typically I buy cleanskins from wineries or wine stores that specialise in such. There are many out there (stores that is - mostly in Victoria) but again, buyer beware. There is a lot of crap out there.
Wineries that I have bought from direct include Ashton Hills and Haselgrove - and Rymill semi-directly.

Totally agree, I also buy cleanskins regularly and there are some fantastic bargains out there.
However it is certainly a case of buyer beware. I would always ensure taste a cleanskin before purchasing - there are a lot of faulty wines out there. However, with the so called "grape glut" I think it is something we will see a lot more of.
