Mood and Wine

Post by Old Salt »

Okay - another one flushed out.
I thought while this is closely related to the "Why Red" topic, it is a different subject and may even be worthy of a Poll?

I'm a Brisbanite and find that my indulgence is influenced to a large extent by the weather, mood, drinking alone or in company, etc.
How often did you enjoy a bottle of wine in good company, only to be disappointed when you bought the same wine later?

Those aspects don't appear to have been considered or commented on to any extent in any Forum I visited over recent years. My cellar (about 1400 bottles) is about 75% red, the balance whites, sparkling and stickies. That, for my taste, is 'balanced' and accommodates most of my "mood" swings, etc.

What's better than a beer before, during and after mowing the lawn? I got a big yard!
And it's beer when I am in a foul mood (Broncos getting beaten :x ), no good wasting good wine when the mind is vengeful and tastebuds shot.

Feeling on top of the world on a warm day, I find a bottle or two of champers called for or a fresh Riesling or even the odd SSB. I find Chardies, especially the heavier oaked ones, food wines. Some exceptions there.
Our cooler days (no winters in Brisbane over recent years) are definitely 'red' days; before, during and after dinner and between meals. I frequently chill my reds (a few ice cubes in a wine cooler will do the trick, too much ice 'freezes' it). Some of my friends thought this weird but soon saw the light.

A nice sparkler and stickies are year round propositions. I recently ventured into the sparkling reds arena and am rueful I didn't do so earlier. Credit card - watch out.

A particular hard working week/day sees a bottle of 98 Chalambar and 97 Mountain Blue opened on the bench. I wouldn't appreciate champers tonight and don't have the taste for any whites. Mood affected tonight's decision.

And later tonight, Go the Broncos, or it'll be beer tomorrow; but up to midday only

I don't see your question in there.

Are you asking if people over rate wines when they are in good company?
Of course.

That's what it's all about.
Go to a restaurant with a group on a night when everyone is tired, the food sucks. go when everyone is bouncing, then it's great.

I still don't know your question or statement though :?

Hello Old Salt,

I am a Brisbanite also. Mood and wine......???

I find that red wine is noticeably more enjoyable (summer or winter), after the sun has gone down. Sometimes, to accompany a hearty steak for lunch I will order a shiraz or cabernet....and it is just not the same. Even in an air-conditioned restaurant.

Something about sunlight and a glass of red! I hear that Vampires thirst for a drop of red

When I lived in Cloncurry.....you could not beat a cold beer anytime. Especially before opening the wine to enjoy with the BBQ.......

White....well I did have a glass of champagne at my Daughters 21st, and it was delicious.

When stressed I choose scotch (straight up).

A very average wine usually transforms into a delicious drop when enjoyed with a group of friends. :P And, everything tasts better when you are celebrating....

Dan - what I am trying to say is that certain circumstances influence my choice of what to drink. For example, I wouldn't appreciate a top drop after a bad day at the office/being in a bad mood - maybe I should but I can't envisage doing it. Thus it affects what I pull out of the cellar.
My question I thought was easy enough but apparently not clear enough, is what you elect to drink influenced by mood, drinking in company or alone? (and please no slanging match - take it easy on me, please),

Santa - I concur with your succinct summation. It sums up my own general drinking pattern which is at times influenced by what I said above.

P.S. We are now into the Mountain Blue and I feel a lot chirpier already :)

Yep, yep, absolutely.
It isn't always a taste thing.

If I'm thirsty its a beer.
If I'm run down it's a sweeter style Mojito

Depends on the Scotch... and what you have it with.

It wasn't THAT good

Have you finalised the dates for your trip to Brisbane in May?

I'll arrive there midday May 11th, and fly out the evening of the 13th.

Saturday night's the footy, so Friday night's the go for an offline.

Cheers,
Ian
