TN: 2004 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Shiraz

Post by tpang »

TN: 2004 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Eden Valley Shiraz, bottle #0946/????

Poured a glass after opening, capped back the rest (stelvin), tasted after about an hour. Dark plum, but a sense that it was closed. Tannic, with hints of bitter chocolate and coffee grains, though neither were obvious. A second glass at 2 hours was opulent and contained sesame with aniseed undertones, which quite evolved into sweet cinnamon. Oak, oak, oak! Severely lacking in aftertaste. Might be good accompanying a tomato based italian dish.

Overnight in the fridge, legs are lost, still a closed structure but has lost any character. Still oaky on the nose, a little fruit on the pallet, sweetness even. But absolutely no aftertaste.

Very disappointing, and in it's current state not worth the $30 price tag. However, given the secondary structure that emerged on the first day, there's still a possibility it might turn out well in the next 2-3 years.

I can guarantee you have had a dud bottle; I have tried the wine a few times and it sounds nothing like what you have consumed.

Never crossed my mind that it might have been a corked bottle, since it was very interesting over time on the first day.

More than happy to take you up on your kind offer Dom.
How should we go about it?

I received Domenic's kind offer of the 03 & 04 shiraz last week.

Tasting notes of 03 & 04 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Shiraz: Both bottles were opened and stood to breathe for an hour before pouring. The 04 started showing on the hour, and the 03 took a further 30mins. The 03 #1730 had an aromatic nose, but taste-wise the earthy fruits didn't seem to pair up very well. Tannins were clearly present. The drink has a high level of astringency, and I think it's worth revisiting this in a couple of years. The 04 #1804 was markedly different from the previous bottle I had. Dark hunk of colour with a lovely nose of sweet clove and a mouthful of fruit. Very interesting combination here, excellent joocey drink.

I had both bottles at my work place, and my colleagues all preferred the 04, and in their opinion would definately be something they'd keep in mind when looking for a bottle or few.
