Vintage 86 competition

Post by jacques »

I just got a 86 Leoville Lascases from oversea which rated 100 points by RP.

I would like to do a blind tasting with some of our local wines from the same vintage and see how they go.

The followings is found in my celler

Hill of Grace 86
Grange 86
Petaluma red 86
707 86
John Riddoch 86
Signature 86
Magill 86
Sally"s Paddock 86

Due to the limit of glass and time , I only want to pick three of them, any suggestion?

I guess if you want to compare apples with apples, it would rule out the shiraz, leaving the Petaluma, 707 and Riddoch as the likely contenders.

If you just want to compare the best, I'd probably pick the Grange, the HOG and the Riddoch but that's just my arbitary choice.
Cheers,
Kris

Not the Magill as it is past its peak going on the two bottle I had over a year ago.

When did parker rate it 100? From what I can see he is between 97-98, maybe in the new book?

If you want to get the most from the LLC, I would wait 5-20 more years...but if you must, give it a good decant, the 86's are still not ready.

Whatever you decide, good luck!
That was back in 1998...Im sure he must have updated his window by now...

I agree it should have been - but it hasn't. You know Parker. Lazy, lazy, lazy!

Well, in my copy of his lastest released guide, it show 100 pts there. Hope it is not a typing mistake. Anyway, I dont think I can really tell the difference of two pts.

Yeah, his latest book is not on the internet site...so that will be his new score.

What is the drinking window in the book??

I have some of this, but based on my recent experience with the 86's, I think I will wait...

Thanks for your advice and I think I will go for the Petaluma, 707 and Riddoch, it sound a bit more fair.

Anyone taste them lately? I had a bottle of 87 John Riddoch couple months ago and it is excellent. Is the 86 vintage is better than the 87?

Just had the '86 LLC 2 months ago. Superb stuff but still very youthful. Don't waste it. Stay another 10 years, at least.

Few years ago I got to try the also 100pt 86 Lafite. It was a very fine wine, piles of the pencil shaving stuff going on. But I was surprised at how 'developed' it was.

Had it in a line up of about 15 world class cabs, I actually marked the 93 Henschke Cyril ahead of it. Lafite came in 2nd, and then the 96 707 wasnt too far down the list either!!

I actually prefered the 00 Lafite I had a couple of years ago..did that get 100pts?? cant remember

Its always good to try a great wine, the devil is in the detail - thats where great wines are great

Very contrary to my tastings of the 86 Lafite...I have found it so young I dont think it will hit maturity for 15 years. But thats wine...and the vagarities of the not-so-perfect seal. But then if they were under screwcap we would probably have to wait 50 years for it to come around...

The 2000 is outstanding, and yes, also 100pts.

Jacques, you will not be disappointed with the 86 LLC.
I still believe that it is the best wine i have tasted to date!!!
Agreed, that it is still relatively youthful, and can keep for another 10-15 years, but it is such a joy now on the nose, and palate with ample fruit and aged earthy development that it would be a shame to let up this opportunity to try it at this stage. I still distinctly remember the beautiful aromas akin to a brie de miuex, intermingled with the fruit.........
Ahhh.... when will i get another chance to savour such wine???
As to the other part of your post, maybe the 86 moss wood to compare???

Cheers,

Monghead

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Since I still have around half dozen of the LLC in my cellar, so I think I should try it.

I would like to compare it with the Mosswood 86 as well but unfortunately, I dont have that one in my cellar.

Anyway, will do this tasting in the early of November when some of my friends come to Australia from oversea. Will let you guys know about the result then.
