2005 in margaret river

Post by burrito »

Hello Forumites

seeing that the 2005 whites should be hitting the market soon, would really appreciate any info on how the 2005 MR whites are? I particularly like the white blends of semillon and/or sauvignon blanc and/or chenin, etc. Thanks!!

Think the Reds could be better but was fairly good all round I think.

For early 2005 released (quaffer?), I couldnt be too bothered. Anyway WA whites are terribly consistent.

Whites are very good to excellent across the board. Most were in before dodgy rain and cold spells. You should be able to buy with confidence. Reds are a mixed affair, but way too early for specific assessments.

Agree generally with brad, but with some specifics for you. Most whites came off very well due to a slow start to the season and little in the way of heat spikes ... some chardonnays picked in mid March will be excellent.

The reds will be a mixed bunch as brad alluded to. Any reds picked prior to the 30th March (subject to them being fully ripe) should be excellent - I know the Wilyabrup guys are generally very happy as they picked mostly before that date. After the 30th March then it will be down to vineyard management and effort by the growers, anyone with a sloping vineyard, low watering regime, fruit thinned and leaf plucked may get away with it and produce good plonk - the rest will find it hard going one would think. Southern regions of Karridale may have found it very tough this year.

It's pouring down now so god help anyone who has petit verdot awaiting the picking shears!

Cheers

Australias only real Petit Vedot grows around Mildura IMO. Other places can fluke a good vintage here and there but no consistancy.

I would have thought that Pirramimma's Petit Verdot rated pretty well.
