Re: September 2023 Purchases
I ended up going long on the MM Quintet (always a sucker for good marketing labelling it one of the all time vintages for the wine…).
Picked up a mixed case of the MM Pinot and Chardonnay too.
Cue in the rack for the balance of the month at least now!
Cheers Ed

Re: September 2023 Purchases
Setiono offer came out today and I think a few of us will be buying. I took 6 of the 2 wines on offer - the 2022 Flaxman Syrah and the 22 Louwke Shiraz, which comes from a small vineyard of the same name in the Barossa.

Re: September 2023 Purchases
No mate ordered from Best’s.
Just missing the 08’s and a couple from the 90’s to have 3 complete verticals.
Cheers Con.
Re: September 2023 Purchases
Very impressive Con, was the first Bin 0 in 1965 (by the way good year that!) and then 2-3 releases in the 70s and it really got going after that?
I have 2-3 vintages in the 80s, 90s, 00s, but no where near a full set.

Hi Mate.
I meant complete verticals of the Thomson Family.
The oldest BIN 0 I have is a 90 and 92.
I’ve been trying to put together a few complete verticals. Only need a couple of vintages of John Riddoch, Mount Mary and Moss Wood.
Cheers Con.

Re: September 2023 Purchases
Very impressive indeed Con. I have some 98 and 96 TFS but that is it.
I have 3-4 complete sets of JR, well I did as of this morning...with the should not have ever been made 2020 being released today. Certainly won't be buying more than 3-4.
Have every vintage of Michael...but drank the 55 over 30 years ago.
I would like a 84 and 85 Rockford BP to go with the other 34 bottles, but have never seen an 85 and only one 84. Guess I could call and see what it would take to get them.
Cheers Craig

Re: September 2023 Purchases
Very nice Craig. Good bottles of older vintages are getting very hard find.
On the Best’s website they have got back vintages of TFS magnums on average for $900.
Never had old Aussie legend like the 55 Michael. We did discuss the idea of group buying a featured wine like the 55, Peppermint Patty and Woodley’s.
The only thing close to a legend that I’ve had would be the 82 Riddoch and 91 Centenary.
Cheers Con.

Having had the pleasure of some Woodley's Treasure Chests (albeit over twenty years ago) - outstanding, and Peppermint Pattie, '59 Rouge Homme, '62 Bin 60A, all outstanding, and even the first '54 Black Label (ok, label was white actually ), I can say there have been a lot of absolute treats in Australian wine history that perhaps we don't appreciate as much as we should. Good bottles of '82 JR and '91 Centenary certainly come close though. Alas, I have but a single bottle of '82 JR left in the cellar from my original purchase back in '85 or thereabouts. Maybe next year's significant birthday may see it cracked open along with some 90A, '96 and '04 Block 42 and '04 Bin 60A
cheers, Malcolm

Con, I remember the day like it was last week. It was a hotel clearance auction and think it was Colin Gaetjens (who started Oddbins wine auctions Adelaide), in charge and the venue of all places was Ayers House. Many of the lots were 5's or 11's,as a chap I knew well from the pub sampled many single bottles. There were old 70s and early 80s Henschkes going for a song and a couple of 55 Michaels. Nobody knew much about them, but of course there had to be someone who did and forced me to pay $180 which was more than a weeks wages. I was studying Oenolgy at the time and decided after many other good bottles at a bbq, to open it. At 28-29 years of age it was bright, full of fruit and tannins simply melted away.
It was an ethereal experience that's for sure. I think I spotted two bottles at a Langtons auction 10 or so years ago, and the pair went for $5-6, 000.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but 82 JR at some places was discounted to $11 a bottle and I purchased 12 Centenary at $28 a bottle at Ed Cellars. We all needed to buy 10 dozen each.
Might see what we can do Malcolm about a catch up, and well done on a significant birthday in 2024, I have one the following year. Never had the Woodleys, nor the '63 PP (one of Halliday's books proudly bears a receipt of $1: 50 a bottle), but a 1980 St George a few years back was a delight.
Cheers Craig

Re: September 2023 Purchases
I’m not sure it’s a purchase more like a Never Ending Box Of Tim Tams. I’m in the process of moving the remnants of my Hong Kong cellar to Adelaide and another case of Bruno Giacosa riservas turned up. That’s about three cases now of 2001 and 2004’s. I bought six packs initially years ago but was sent additional six packs. Maybe I bought them maybe not, can’t really check as a CC long gone. Anyways, a beautiful six pack of 2001 Giacosa Barbaresco Asili Riservas in OWC is now in Adelaide.

I was hoping to have a bit of time off after MM, however have also picked up 3 each of the wines from Sam. Quite limited quantities available so didn’t want to hold off.I Love Shiraz wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 12:03 am 3 x Setiono Flaxman Valley Syrah 2022

I also picked up a mix 6 of some Bleasdale wines. Damn Halliday. At least they’re all relatively well priced wines. I wonder how long until that changes?
Cheers Ed
Re: September 2023 Purchases
I would actually like to purchase some of the Bleasdale fortifieds, but from memory most rather exxy.
They used to have a couple of annual winery sales each year, where there was a heap of stuff going for good prices, and people would line up from 8 AM.
Wonder if there will be another one.
Cheers Craig

Re: September 2023 Purchases
Yep even I jumped in...at $15 a bottle, thought it very good when I tried it at the Coonawarra Rd show last month. Having one tonight with a few people coming round for the big game, at least a green chicken curry will appease, even if the score doesn't!!
Speaking of everyone flogging stuff, see the Stonehaven 2021 Padthaway Cab, (old Hardys/Accolade/Constellation set up, now owned by CW wines , who have more labels than hot dinners, including Reschke) reviewed a couple of weeks back in The Oz, selling for $25 (joke RRP of $80).
Might be worth a sixer?

Re: September 2023 Purchases
Ordered a few more from Talijancich Wines.
3 X Julian James Rare Pedro 1978 Solero Blend No. 3.
6 X Muscat 1983 Solero Blend No. 1 - NEW RELEASE.
This below is from the winery’ website.
The Gordo Blanco Muscat variety is recognised as one of the oldest grape varieties in the world and is known for producing the finest fortified wines.
My father, Peter, had the opportunity to purchase a small quantity of this variety in 1961 and would go on to produce our most prized and sought-after fortified wine - the Reserve Muscat 1961 Solero.
The last vintage of Muscat that he and I produced together was in 1983. In recent years we were fortunate to find a small vineyard of Gordo Blanco Muscat in the swan Valley. It was exceptional quality, and I knew that blending it with our remaining 1983 Muscat was going to produce an extraordinary wine.
Please enjoy this liqueur that is the culmination of my family’s 90-year commitment to winemaking.
Produced from 100% Swan Valley Pedro Ximenes. This spectacular old vineyard is now 120 years old (planted in 1900). We have been purchasing this exceptional quality fruit for over 60 years.
This is our finest vintages from 1978 through to 2001, blended over 30 years in old brandy casks, giving an average age of over 25 years. Each bottling represents a blend number, and is signed by the winemaker confirming the date of bottling.
An extraordinary liqueur of immense dimension and complexity, reflecting over 30 years of blending.
Cheers Con.
