Anyone tasted Aldi supermarket wines?

Post by Colin »

I visited an Aldi supermarket for the first time yesterday and noticed they buy wine and stick their own label on it. Margaret River 2002 CS for $16.99, Mornington Penninsula 2000 Pinot Noir $16.99 etc, has anyone tried it and is it any good and what is the QPR?

Seems like an expensive glorified cleanskin to me. I know McGuigan was selling them fruit for some of their 'house wines' and wouldn't be surprised if the fruit came from a major company who had excess grapes.

The Pinot might be ok, whowever it is already 5 years old and might be starting to get tired. The Cab I would think would be quite green and herbal (unless it was a super-ripe wine which I doubt from 2002).

At those prices, your better off going with a producer you know like stoniers, t'gallant, etc.

cheers

Salient advice and probably on the money as I haven't seen any forum TNs proclaiming these wines to be noteworthy and the wines have been on the market for a few months now. Colin
