To use a current example, just picking a couple of different offers out of the air.

Palmer was offered around GBP1,000/6 in the UK, and around $3,000 case in Aus.

At a rate of 1.8, and an air freight price of 180GBP (what I was quoted a few years ago, much cheaper than BBR), it'll still cost you a shade under $3,250 to land that same case in Aus yourself.

$500 a bottle for Palmer is a decent price in terms of what it costs ex-cellar. (not a decent price in terms of what you can get it for in older vintages)
The UK consumer needs to pay VAT and duty on top of that, so they aren't getting any bargain compared to the Aus purchaser. They will end up paying about the equivalent of $400 to drink it.

I don’t know about a bargain, but you’re drinking your bottle of Palmer in the uk for around £200 / $375.

Anyway, point here, is there aren’t really any tricks here - sadly. The only way to save yourself any money is to buy a shit load of wine & import it yourself.

Ah, I see what you mean.

That said, think there are still bargains to be had. Pontet Canet was pretty good value on first release. Not everywhere, but there is value.

I could buy the 2019 here in France at the equivalent of AU$303 ... there is basically no duty on wine in France and VAT is 20% so that makes it about AU$363 when delivered ...

I am not seeing the 2010 in Wine Searcher any cheaper than 25-30% more expensive than that here in France.

Basically all the same in the UK except add £30ish per case for duty when having your EP delivered.

Which is just to say, the equation might look different if you are not in Australia.

yes, and a few other countries. 2019 Palmer came out in HK at AUD $350 approx, you can get the 2010 for $380.

I purchased a case of 2014 Mouton (son birth year) for $350 a bottle, thinking I had an astonishing bargain, there are places in HK where you can do bundled deals and pick up the 2014 Mouton for $376 a bottle lol, and that is a FG that I had always felt were exempt from depreciation ex-en primeur

En Prem is a candy store for wine buyers. Those glossy labels, those eloquent reviews, so tasty, so tempting

I have only bought En Prem in 2005 and 2015. Aside from 2015 Canon I don't think I saved much money over the years I just bought immediately on retail release. Some 2009's and 2010's I bought retail I think cheaper than en prem by the time you factor in cost of money

But 2019 Pontet Canet was only $15 more than I paid so the 2005 En Prem, and based on good reviews I snapped some up this year. Relativities too...in 2005 a PC was 2x a Coleraine, 2019 it will be 1.5x if that

This year is DEFINITELY the last time I buy En Prem. By the time a 2019 PC is really ready to drink I will be 75 or dead. Truth is I will drink most of them way too young. I will enjoy them yes, but...

2019 La Conseillante came out at 175 euros ex-cellar.ex cellar!!!

and they are rejoicing to say that the price is 30% cheaper than the 2018.
at the same time, they fail to mention that after all the add-ons, you can still buy the 2009 and 2010 cheaper

smoke and mirrors never had it so good!!!!

Ha! This year im buying in Singapore but storing in Bordeaux...amazed they only charge storage at 50c SGD per 6 per month ...and the EP pricing is obviously well below 'straya.

I think I generally prefer Clos L'eglise which will probably be cheaper...though I don't have much experience with Clinet

I've ordered some Pontet Canet and some Leoville Barton. Both are only a tiny fraction above what I paid for the 2005 versions EP
Relativities with local wines are now way better so...

I ordered one magnum just because I think it would be cool to collect when it arrives and it's obviously a rarer format, probably no other reason than that. Probably means I will never see it in its proper drinking window

I have stayed away from more expensive wines as I seldom have the occasion to drink, I am getting too old and older vintages of those wines are only fractionally more $$. eg a 100 pointer 2003 Montrose I can have for $50 more than a 2019 EP

I have never hit the financial jackpot with EP. The only wine I have ever purchased that has significantly proven its worth from a cost vs eventual retail point of view is 2015 Ch Canon. Buying stuff as common as PC and LB will never be a profit game

I am hoping my 1988 Pape Clement and Haut-Bailly have by now integrated. As for Pauillac I would also put my money on my single bottle of 1988 Lynch-Bages. Fingers crossed.
