Has anyone tried this wine if so whats it like any advise greatfully recieved!

Sorry, I can't help you with a tasting note on this particular wine, but I do know where there's some awfully cheap Dead Arm. I'm sure you don't need a TN/reminder on that one!

Derek, 1989 was a very ordinary vintage in most of South Australia with only a handful of really good wines produced. These included the one off Seppelt Show Shiraz, the Lehmann Stodart winner later to morph into The Mentor, Wof Blass Black Label and Rockford Basket Press.

Having tried several of these in recent years I can say with some cettainty that all of them are now struggling and in decline so the Magill would be in at least the same category or worse than these vintage peaks.

And 1998? Magill has always been one of those I never get around to buying - can't have them all, if you know what I mean - but I did get a couple of the 1998s as I couldn't resist. Mind you, as I recall they cost about $45 then! If anyone's tasted one, please share.

and from memory Penguin Wine Guide Shiraz of the year.
I havent tried it but for some reason have a magnum of the dang thing :roll:

Re: 1998 Magill - I have a 6-pack but have not tried one. However, I know that Attila has had a bottle and he was very, very impressed by it, so much so that he took another bottle to one of his Hungarian Shiraz tastings. In fact, it was in his top 10 of 2003. 1998 PENFOLDS Magill
Laser etched (guaranteed quality and origin) bottle. The only single vineyard wine made by Penfolds. Winemaker: John Duval. A shiraz from the original site in Adelaide, established in 1844 by Dr. C.R.Penfolds. The grapes were hand picked from the little more than 5 hectares Magill vineyard planted to shiraz. The wine spent 16 months in new French (58%) and American (42%) oak. Limited release. Bottle no:20257. Some people prefer this wine to the Grange.
Very dark red colour with cherry red showing on the edges. On the nose it is restrained with peppers, dark berry, licorice and scents of blueberry. The palate is a real surprise, very complex and flavorful. Crammed with great and juicy shiraz flavours, the wine is a treat. Drinking beautifully now it finishes with ripe tannins and lovely grainy oak. Needs 10 more years until full maturity.
"Wow, what a great wine...perfectly balanced" said Tony with a nod.
"First class winemaking, faultless and fantastic" added Franz W.sr.
"A top Australian shiraz" noted Franz P.
I was very impressed by this great and fantastic Magill. Tony and I choose it as our favourite wine of the evening.

Magill is a suburb of Adelaide (about 10Km from the city centre) and is situated well below the real elevation of the hills so it's a bit warmer. The resulting wine tends to be like a bit of a weird morph between Adelaide Hills & McLaren Vale, and more the latter in warmer/stronger vintages.

It also has an odd habit of producing some reasonable wines in pretty average years (like the St Henri) due to the single vineyard/region & the dry-grown/hand-picked combination.

That said I would agree with Adair & Steve the 1989 would be a drink now propostion at best. I wouldn't look at anything prior to 1991 (personally even prior to 1994) due to the elegant style they were pursuing, resulting in wines that didn't cellar too well. The 1998 is a bit of a freak for the label, being the most powerful to date; the two blocks up the top of the vineyard reached Grange quality that year (as well as 1996 and 1999), and produced abnormally powerful fruit.

Ian, you sem to know too much about what Penfolds are up to.

Do you have a very good contact at Penfolds or are you really a Penfolds mole spying on us here at the Auswine forum?

A mole for Penfolds? - after the way I've got stuck into some of their latest releases I can't see how anyone could get that impression. Potential Groupie more likely!

I know a few people there in various capacities, and seem to get answers to most of the questions I ask. I half expect they don't think I'll remember the answers, well not a few years down the track anyway!

So you're actually the Auswine mole in Penfolds. Keep up the incisive questioning and don't develop brain fade.
