Re: April 2020 Purchases
Zilch for me.
I'm expecting to provide free homes and business premises for folks affected by the economic collapse due COVID. Now I understand this civic duty- though will the banks/councils/state governments?
And seriously, with the $AUD down near .55 to the USD, every spare cent I have has been buying $AUD.The $AUD will not always be this low. The sea of fine wine is about to get deeper so I can put off buying for awhile!

Re: April 2020 Purchases
It's still the 31st here in Edmonton, but since this an Australian wine forum, and it is already April over there, I will post todays purchase. A recent find, and very enjoyable in a whisky-like way, a pair of Favell's London Dock Rum (57.1%) made at the iconic Demerrara Distillers Limited in Guyana, makers of the El Dorado brand. The bottles I found were an old bottling with an historic looking old-fashioned label. The new one looks like a label you might find on a beer bottle.
Both are blended and bottled in Newfoundland, Canada but I found the older one drier and more whisky-like while the newer batch is a tad sweeter. I prefer the older batch while the other half prefers the newer.
Mahmoud.

Just quietly reckon you have enough wine, with cellars all over the globe...and the continuing march of Italian varietalsJamieBahrain wrote:Zilch for me.

I know, I am in the same space (not multiple cellars, but enough stock), and seriously questioning why do I still buy, to keep a line going...why, because someone said this is great...why, because its Riesling ...arrgh or Coonawarra, double arrgh!!
I have finally drawn the line in the sand and 2020 is the last vintage I will need to purchase. There will be the odd case or two of back-filling, but really how much wine does one need!
Yes the AUD is interesting, in 2001 did something similar when it was 46c against the Greenback.
Had a rellie who worked several years in Saudi being paid in USD, making it nearly 3:1 in her favour. Paid off a mortgage in less than 5 years. Surprisingly interest rates were 3-4+ times back then to what they are now. Don't worry about Covid-19, if interest rates were now 10%, people would be shot in the street.
Whilst there is the odd bargain floating around in Australia...still waiting for that sea of fine wine. Appreciate Jamie that we buy in different markets and you at ??higher price levels, still its not yet arrived. Is the wave coming, might have to be patient.
Cheers Craig

Re: April 2020 Purchases
I think this could me more telling than previous events. There's so much fine wine about. There will be clever industry resistance to the dam wall breaking, but if it does, prices in many areas will tumble. We saw this with Aussie wines that were quietly dumped in Asia after the failing of a few investment funds. Not the big name stuff but a lot of it on Langton's classification.

Im already starting to see lots offers coming through daily. Some good, some not so good as to tempt me to buy.JamieBahrain wrote:I think this could me more telling than previous events. However my thoughts about the future, and due to the massive drop in the value of AUD, is that I wonder if we will see more discount for future/new import deals coming?
Any drop in price by the winery/importer will surely be eaten up in the drop of currency? Current & landed stock already in the country, absolutely people
will be wanting to clear it, but future stock and prices... i guess only time will tell.
Re: April 2020 Purchases
Jamie, that makes me laugh and tough for an Aussie producer/investor who can't or won't dump their wines hereJamieBahrain wrote:I think this could me more telling than previous events. Re: April 2020 Purchases
The Barolo / Nebiolo / Barbaresco thread has me hooked.
Strange times where finances are tight but consumption is high, we normally purchase an entire year of wine in Jan. Allowances have been made, although the budget was tight, this is a rare mid year 'top up'.
Thank you to the forum brothers who made some suggestions, even if I didn't listen!

Look forward to your notes ! That thread is a bit overweight with my posts!
Have to say a very positive part of my day is sharing a fine wine each evening . A lovely joy at present .
Tre Vigne will age a long time and is underrated

Cheers Jamie.
Thank you for your input, shame the budget was not more flexible.
I have been wading through an ocean of Chianti and Brunello for the last three years.
I hope my Piedmont journey is as fun.

Re: April 2020 Purchases
With the insecurity abounding, I was happy to be on my way to a zero buy month.
However, due to massive issues at Italian ports, wines are being airfreighted and allocations coming up ahead of time. Like the time when I lost my job during 9/11, breaking the rules only for well bought wines, I can offload again if needed.
Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Rupestris Barolo 2015 x 14 750ml
Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Rupestris Barolo 2015 x 3 1500ml
Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Franco Barolo 2015 x 6 750ml
So if I'm out of work I'll call on the miners and medicos amongst the forumites to take my Cappellanos.
