October 2019 Purchases
Re: October 2019 Purchases
Some 2017 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir
Re: October 2019 Purchases
Wow, two purchases inside a week I wasn't planning to buy, but Tom C on wine Pages alerted us to some cut-price 2006 Tahbilk ESPs - both shiraz and CS at £20 a bottle (was a pretty genuine £45 a bottle before). So just 3 of the CS, plus a bottle of Cune GR Rioja and a Jadot Santenay scraped me over the £100 mark
The ESPs have been of interest for a long time, but I'd never bought one as the price always felt a bit too much for a punt. That and they are rarely seen here and I've never even tasted one. At £20 a pop, happy to gamble on 3, based on liking the basic bottlings.

Re: October 2019 Purchases
No 2017 Terre Nere for me! The retailer I purchased from has decided to cancel all his customer orders after consultation with the importer. 40% of bottles were leaking. Appears to be an issue at the bottling stage. A new brand of corks for the 2017 vintage may be responsible. While I'm disappointed, it's the right decision. Nothing worse than cellaring bottles for 5-10 years only to realise they are all stuffed.Ozzie W wrote:Another email offer. This time for the 2017 Terre Nere's. Resistance is futile!
2 x 2017 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana

1 x 2017 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro delle Rose
1 x 2017 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso PrePhylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino
If you've already purchased 2017 Terre Nere, check your bottles very closely for signs of leakage.

Always an interesting selection Sam
Have you tried the Lopez de Heredia (Tondonia) whites yet? I'm a big fan, as I find they really work well with robust flavours, but tasted on their own can be a bit of a shock to the system, with that touch of oxidation.
Another recco will be the Vinho Verdes of Quinta do Soalheiro. The standard bottling is great and can shine even more with a decade in bottle, but the Primeiras Vinhas bottling is probably the pick of the fancier bottles, despite not being that much more than the standard label. Especially worth trying if you like the Albarino listed above.
Good to see some Loire Cab Franc in there as well, a region/grape that seems to offer great value (to my palate, though I'm not sure those who regularly imbibe Barossa shiraz would agree - almost opposite ends of the spectrum)

Magnums of 2014 PdB Rabaja and Ovello
Magnum of Cascina delle Rose Tre Stelle 2016 Barbaresco
Just bargains and taking advantage of friends taking them back to ADL cellar. I’ll be finishing up in Albania trekking so no capacity for wine buying

At half price why not? Unless the 50% is an artificial construct based on an inflated RRP.phillisc wrote:And the first offer arrived yesterday, a 2016 MV Cabernet from a well known maker at 50+% off....do I go for it?

Taking a chance on a mixed case of 2018 Vouvray from France. Wine will be great, but who knows what temperature it will be in Melbourne when it arrives..

Got there on Sunday afternoon, was down to 1 bottle per person
Only available was the Shiraz and Eclipse (mainly granache)
Said the line up on Saturday was out the door and into the vines, that they were doing tastings in the queue!
Good thing had my partner (pregnant), mother (doesn't drink) and MIL with me!
Enjoyed the Shiraz and Granche, not typically a big cab drinker but really enjoyed it.
Good work keeping so many, opened up many back vintages - how they drinking?
Will have to make the effort to get onto the list to try and secure some more, any tips?

Not being a smartarse - just send Rae a nice email with your impressions of their wines as you write them here, say you have seen plenty of recommendations on the Auswine site and ask if you can join their mailing list. Pretty sure you'll get a mailer next year.

I did similar with Wendouree but the handwritten approach as suggested, which worked - managed to pickup 6 Shiraz 2nd year!
Will give the email a go fingers crossed, be nice to be able to open up a few and have some still put away.

Yes agreed, Drew Noon is the consummate chap...if I was ever in the position to own a vineyard he would be the first i'd call. Love his no nonsense no fuss approach, if the fruit is slightly off the wine's not made. Rae is lovely too...drop them a line, I was on the reserve for the reserve list back in 06, but got on the following year.Michael McNally wrote:Not being a smartarse - just send Rae a nice email with your impressions of their wines as you write them here, say you have seen plenty of recommendations on the Auswine site and ask if you can join their mailing list. Sent them an email - fingers crossed.
Given you have been on the list for a while, have you ever tried the VP?
Noticed one on the wall in the cellar and asked Drew about it, not released every year
I'm a big fan of the Rockfords VP
