Whatcha drinking for Chrissy?

Waiting for someone else to post this obvious one but I'm off tomorrow so to generate some conversation in a very slow moving board, What does everyone have planned for Christmas and the break, wine-wise?

I've got a bottle of 97 Heidsieck Mis en cave and a 94 Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz planned for Christmas day. There will be a few others brought along by other members of the family but I have no idea what these will be.

Boxing day will be a bit more interesting as I usually have a few friends over for leftovers. Planning some NV Veuve on arrival followed by frozen margheritas. I've asked for BYO but will have a few Cloudy Bay Sav Blancs and Rockford Alicante Bouchets open as these are my summer staples. Then for after lunch with pudding, I've taken the plunge, after having the lifechanging experience of the 100 year Seppelt para port, to buy the 50 year old Para. It all goes downhill after lunch and things get very messy so I'll probably be back on the beers and water, ensuring a proper hangover!

Hi Kris,

I got past this one years ago. :wink: My two sisters are in charge of doing all the food and I am in charge of bringing all the wine. So far, it looks like some c-through bubbles (which I will have to buy because I donÂ’t have any local stuff and the c-though drinkers wouldnÂ’t appreciate the Frog stuff) whilst the red bigots suck on some (probably) Seppelt 90 or 93 SRSS. With pud, it will be a bottle of Seppelt DP 59 - Rare Tokay and then for the soaks who are still thirsty (me,) a couple of half bottles of DP 63 Muscat. This is the first Christmas in years I donÂ’t have to drive home from Sydney, so I am going to enjoy it.

Maybe try some of this South Australian muck I have just bought if it is not too hot. 02 Wirra Wirra RSW or 02 Melton Reds or 02 Turkey Flat..or maybe one of those 02 Rockford Basket Press Special Release Fortified Shiraz....

I think you will like the 50 y/o more than the 100. It is a better drink imo.

Seafood lunch will be accompanied by 97 leonay, pewsy vale contours from 98, Houghtons white burgundy and a 95 Art series Chardy with a darkish colour? and some clover hill 1999 bubbles.

Dinner will be accompanied with the 94 Seppelt Show Sparkling too as well as Laurent Perrier? Rose, 98 Darenberg Ironstone Pressings and other SA 'Muck' like Kays Block 6 and the like.

Finishing off with the 21 year old Para that is pretty good too.

Ah Gary, except for the Voyager, you're so predictable - not that I can fault any of that at all. And it looks very similar to mine!

I'd actually go the Billecart over the mis en cave but it was a gift myself, Lisa and her brother received and we've been hanging onto it for a suitable occasion to drink. He's just bought a house and it's Christmas so it's the perfect excuse to drink it, all together. Still, I'm not complaining too much.

Its cold up here, so a few big reds should do the trick:-

- 1991 Rockford BP shiraz;
- 1996 Orlando Centenary Hills Shiraz
- 1988 Bin 707;
- 1998 St Hallett Third Century Shiraz.

Definite starter will be the last of my 1995 Seppelt original Saprkling Shiraz.

As to the rest, a selection of 94, 96 and 98 reds (yet to make specific choices)

Got to have a Riesling with the mandatory seafood starter, probably a Leasingham Bin 7 2002

With lunch which includes an aged eye fillet of beef as well as the turkey and ham 1999 Seppelt Drumborg Cab and give 2000 Mt Langhi Girhan Shiraz or 94 Pefolds 389 a go.

96 Pol rose + 96 Pol (or 96 Lanson) white with seafood
94 Sepplet Show Sparkling Shiraz (crown seal) + 01 Epis chard with duck/chook
An old muscat or tokay from a dusty box of allsorts (probably Baileys)
Plus some nice beer if it's hot (cold Peroni Grand Reserva, etc)

Then recover enough to drive for 4 hours the next day.

Christmas day is usually a beerfest with the inlaws for us, hoping to get in some James Squire Golden Ale on the day. Other drops for Christmas night and the rest of the weekend:

A sticky of some sort, given the 92 Noble One's are going downhill, might have to polish them off,

Fortified is hard work in the brisbane heat.

Choices depend a bit on the weather, we are Christmas-lunching at a house that doesn't have airconditioning, but they will all be last-century wines, probably mostly 90 and 91 for the reds.

I'm thinking Seppelt 90 SRSS is a definite, maybe my last 91 SRSS with a backup 93 in case the 91 is as bretty as the previous one. Reds looking interesting include 90/91 Dalwhinnie Cabernets, E&E Black Pepper Shiraz 91 and St Hallett OB Shiraz 91. Stickies will probably be unfortified so we can recover to start all over again with the leftovers after a short snooze and a swim if it's warm enough.

For whites I will be drinking 98 Leuween AS Chard and 2004 Rosenvale Semillon and for reds most likely 94 GC Creek Block and 96 Tintara shiraz.

Last night: Mumms NV

Today: Pol Roger '95 with prawns and salmon, various Lambruscos I have managed to find, and might have a '97 Baileys shiraz tonight as it is drinking very well at the moment.

Tomorrow: Some Golden Ale while watching the test and I may crack a Wild Duck Creek Sp. Duck 3 with garlic and rosemary infused roast lamb, done in the Weber with a few presoaked hickory chips on the coals for the last five minutes or so.

1989 Vallana Gattinara Boca DOC (Piemonte, Italy). A less exalted Nebbiolo wine from a very good vintage. Might be past it, so reserves lie in wait. Hopefully a good match with Guinea Fowl.
