Re: June 2019 Purchases
Bought some quaffing wine to refill the depleted stocks. Seems i have lots of
cellaring stuff, but actually very little 'drinking now' wines.
6 x 2014 Hentley Farm Shiraz - For the better half, i have gone off Barossa Shiraz at the moment, but she still loves it
6 x 2016 Leconfield Coonawarra Cab Sav
6 x 2016 Balgownie Estate Limited Release Shiraz Cabernet
6 x 2016 Baron de Lestac Bordeaux
1 x 2018 Farr Rising Gamay
1 x 2017 Domaine Naturaliste Floris Chardonnay
3 x 1996 Mildara Coonawarra Cab Sav
3 x 2017 Bay of Fires Riesling
1 x 2017 Powell & Son Eden Valley Riesling

Re: June 2019 Purchases
Found a bunch of sherry on sale. We use it for evening aperitifs and for splashing into cooking and for deglazing, namely: Gonzales-Byass 'Tio Pepe' Fino and some old sediment laden bottles of KWV Cape Pale Dry (a South African fino). A few days later I found a 100% Bobal wine from Utiel-Requena in Spain, a 2012 Vicente Gandia 'Bo' Bobal Unico which will be my first Bobal wine. Looking forward to trying it.
Re: June 2019 Purchases
How intriguing. This producer is most well known for their brandy, which (at the higher year levels e.g. 15) is pretty darn good albeit perhaps over priced on a full international comparison. I have brought it back from duty free a couple of times. Their wines are mostly in the $10-15 range and I had no idea they made sherry.Mahmoud Ali wrote: KWV Cape Pale Dry (a South African fino)..

This is the current bottling of the KWV Pale Dry: This is the older livery on the bottles I found on sale: Among the bottles was an even older livery, and note that here they use the term sherry: Mahmoud.sjw_11 wrote:How intriguing. Edit: PS: On the flip side, I haven't seen or heard of the KWV brandy, though considering they make sherry and port, it makes eminent sense.

Michael, well done on the 2016 Bondar Rayner...picked up a dozen at the sea and the vines festival last year ( on again this weekend, Queen's birthday), thought it was sold out.Michael McNally wrote:6 x Tyrrell's Reds (Vat 9, Vat 8 and 'Old Hillside') - thinking I might drop the Vat 8 after the tasting last week.

Know there is a little bit of noise about the '17 Violet Hour on another blog, but had a bottle on Friday and thought it very good.
Yes WDC mailer...could spend an absolute bomb, but will stick with Spingflat and some Yellow Hammer Hill.
Cheers Craig
Tomorrow will be a good day

It is sold out, but when I heard about it last year some time I contacted Selina and asked her to put a couple away for me until my next order. I have never had a bad wine from them and been buying from them for 3 or 4 years. Still have some 2014 Juntos and Violet Hours. Great wines. Love the Junto. And the QPR is excellent!
Same for me with WDCE this year. Might even have to downsize to a six, but hard to pass up some of the 'lesser' labels like Dabblers and Ducks & Drakes.
Hi MahmoudMahmoud Ali wrote:Any connection to the Rayner Vineyard Shiraz that used to be made by made by Brokenwood?
I suspect it is. The Wine Front has some Brokenwood Rayner reviews and say it is from the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and I'm guessing they are one and the same. A lot cheaper though! The 2004 is listed at $69.00.
Cheers

Re: June 2019 Purchases
Coincidentally I also bought some Cote-Rotie.
After tasting a bottle of the 2010 Delas 'Seigneur de Maugiron' Cote-Rotie that I found in a small liquor shop it was clear that I needed to buy some. It isn't a single vineyard wine but rather a blend of fruit from the Cote Brune and Cotes Blonde, so rather less expensive. Nonetheless I was surprised to find this back vintage for only $27, at what must have been an old price. A check on wine searcher shows it to be worth roughly double or more in other parts of the world. The same wine is over $100 at Dan Murphy's and Vintage Cellars!
Anyway, having tasted a bottle and finding it in good nick, I went back to pick up what I thought were five or six bottles. There were a few more :
9 x 2010 Delas 'Seigneur de Maugiron' Cote-Rotie.
The store also had a bottle of 2001 Brand's 'Laira' Coonawarra Cabernet for $35 but I gave that a miss.

Re: June 2019 Purchases
Curiosity led me to look at Wine-Searcher and to my surprise they had the 2016 Brokenwood Rayner Shiraz listed. It is available at cellar door for A$100 and this is what the website says about the vineyard:
Previously made between 1993 and 2007, the Shiraz grapes for this wine are not from the 1950 plantings but from a block right next-door and planted in the early 1990s. A feature of the vineyard, which is just outside the town of McLaren Vale in South Australia, is the deep sand over clay soils.
Relatively easy choice I would think, to buy wine from the original Rayner Vineyard plantings from Bondar (they bought the vineyard in 2013) instead of paying more than double for Brokenwood's newer plantings.
Mahmoud.

Re: June 2019 Purchases
Although now owned by Chinese investors, the winemaker is the same. Jason Stent is a really good wine maker and the range of Paritua reds are very solid. The Red is Merlot dominant (74%) and made more like a St Emilion. Ripeness is a bit high for my tastesChuck wrote:6 x Paritua Hawke's Bay 2015 Red Blend. I really like the Paritua Syrah. More Nth Rhone but still full ripeness and length. They get it fully ripe at 13 to 13.5% alcohol which I appreciate.
