Ochota Barrels '+5V OV' Chardonnay 2014 & ‘186’ Grenache 2013

Post by Phil Wilkins »

The 2013 Ochota Barrels ‘186’ is the very essence of why I love Grenache. Very pale/perfumed/elegant/intense/energetic/balanced all with a deft touch much like the top end, high altitude, Gredos Mountain Grenache. Still young and tight this needs further cellar time to unfurl. £40.00 on sale. Very limited production with only 304 bottles filled. 14.2%. 94pts

2014 Ochota Barrels '+5V OV' Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. A wine of character & food versatility. The palate has a lovely texture, the flavour intense probably due to the two days skin contact. Hard to describe fruit wise - preserved lemon, brine, yeasty richness & seashells spring to mind. The highish acidity and relatively low alcohol give this delightful complexity/mouthfeel. Sinewy without the tautness. One of the few Chards I’ve really, really enjoyed. I love Ochota Barrels wines, just a shame about the price/scarcity with their top bottlings. Incredible enjoyment. £24 (on sale). Just 398 bottles filled. 12.4%vol. 93pts

The lower end cheaper stuff for me is very so so
I must engender some enthusiasm to pay up for the more expensive gear...
I truly love grenache
Look out for the SC Pannel 2017 mclarenvale grenache- it’s a haunting cracker!
