After not buying much (nor drinking - damn flu bug kept me from wanting a drink for a month), a wee order went in, and safely delivered this week. Remarkably fast delivery considering it had to get through the whiteout that's been locally dubbed as 'the beast from the east'.

I haven’t had the 99 Musar for a couple of years now but loved it on each occasion I have managed to find it. There must have been a lot of the 1999 imported into Sydney because it seemed like it went on forever without changing the vintage.Ian S wrote:After not buying much (nor drinking - damn flu bug kept me from wanting a drink for a month), a wee order went in, and safely delivered this week. Separately I tried the Emile at a tasting of 20 rieslings put on by a top Sydney merchant. It was up against the 2017 Grosset Polish Hill and the Crawford River 2016. On the day I thought the latter two came out ahead by a nose and were the two that made it home.

There was a tasting at a local retail store with Langhe Nebb, Barbaresco, Ronchi Cru and Angelo. From the small taste this Barbaresco was the sweet spot for value for me - a big step up from the Nebb in quality, only a small price premium, so bought a bottle for a proper road test. The Angelo was something like 2.5 x price of the normale Barbaresco, lovely wine though I couldn’t see the value there, perhaps in time.

Re: March 2018 Purchases
The Musar appears to be a batch recently re-released by Musar - they do hold quite a bit back, and seem to want to do this to help drive the secondary market price up to drive demand for people to cellar the new releases. This one not as elevated as something like the 1991 (the 1999 just over £30 vs. £20 on initial release a decade ago). I'm not uncomfortable with their strategy as they aren't aggressive on trying to bump the initial release prices up. For me this remains a little underpriced (in much the same way I feel about Wynns Black Label CS).rooman wrote:

It's been a while since I've drunk or even tasted a Trimbach CFE. ~ £17 a half (I never have enough halves). I'd expect some difference in style, but no surprise at all that you find value in SA dry rieslings - and there would be plenty of other candidates from the area. They remain good value even in the WET+GST era

Canon and Conseillante have always been my favourite two Bdx chateaux.
Actually, the 89 Canon is, IMO, a better wine, but I am happy to take just about any vintage of the 80's and 00's.
The imperial of Tertre Roteboeuf was an offer I couldn't refuse!!! hehehe
Re: March 2018 Purchases
yes, I know, it is absurd. If you are patient and shop around, use wine-searcher and talk to others ITB, it is actually quite staggering what you can purchase in a country that doesn't need to fund 40% of it's population (public servants )rooman wrote:God I wished the government would remove WET. I actually feel sorry for the Aussie wine lover, it is just not fair.
The EP prices in HK, for Burgundy in particular, are usually/very often less than half the cost in Australia. Absurd.

Got an offer last week, ordered and confirmed.
2 X 2013 Bruno Giacosa – Rabaja.
2 X 2013 Bruno Giacosa – Rocche del Falletto.
2 X 2011 Bruno Giacosa – Rocche del Falletto Riserva.

Cellar door fest;
2 X 2016 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
1 X 2016 Bowen Estate Shiraz
1 X 2014 Glen Ewin '1881 heritage series' Estate Shiraz
3 X 2017 Kaesler 'the fave' Grenache
2 X 2016 Turon LTD Piccadilly Pinot Noir
2 X 2012 Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
1 X 2013 Zema Estate Family Selection Shiraz
Got a bit of a haul arrving this week from Poonawatta, Kellemeister, Jeanneret, Black Stump, and Muster wines.
Mixed dozen and sixers from each. Quaffers and some nice single vineyard stuff too.
A bottle of Never never gin to round it off.
Gotta say the 'Eden' riesling from Poonawatta was outstanding. Their other gear also very very good.
Also the frankland River Riesling from Black stump very good. (SA cellar door fest??)
For all the great wines I tasted there was some junk from VERY well known labels.
They shall remain nameless but holy thin lollywater.....I was surprised as were my compatriots.
Had to pull the ol' slink away move a few times....
Meant to get back to a few for a final taste but the full time siren sounded
and it was time to hit gouger Street for some cheap and cheerful.
OK nanna trolley don't let me down now...

Acid was a bit bitey but maybe 'cause the oak is way back.phillisc wrote:Scotty, what were the 16 Bowen's like, purchased the 'very acidic' 15s last year.

Tannins fairly solid. Pretty dry overall but my take was that it seemed
more traditionally structured/made than a lot of the other hipster gear getting around.
Jumping over the aisle to Zema the oak difference was quite pronounced.

Re: March 2018 Purchases
Have you tried this before or was it a purchase purely out of curiosity? I really liked the wines from Istria when I was there a couple of years ago. I thought the wines by Roxanich were great. That being said I haven't had much love with Malvasia yet.Ian S wrote: Kozlovic Malvasia 2014 (1x 75cl)

At double cost we are still doing ok. After a review of the Ch Canon 2015, I decided to search winesearcher to check out the price - in Aus $750 pb, in HK around $210felixp21 wrote:yes, I know, it is absurd. Re: March 2018 Purchases
I've seen the 2015 Canon twice in barrel and will have a look at it in bottle this weekend. It is a wonderful wine, no doubt, but I simply do not see it as being better than the 2009. Canon has been on a superlative roll since 2005 (after a big gap since 1989) and I just get the feeling that the critics have finally woken up as to how good this Chateau is (again). A good mate who is in the inside in Bordeaux suggests that the scores of 2015 Canon have a lot to do with the fact that the Chateau tripled it's marketing budget in 2015/2106 hehehe
There is absolutely no way I would pay $700 for it!!! To make you feel worse, I purchased 18 bottles in HK for $135/bottle
We are going to open some 2015's this weekend:
VCC
Canon
Malescot St Exupery
Pichon Lalande
Palmer
Giscours
I'll report back with my impressions. I have said many times on this forum, chase 2015 just about everywhere in France. IMO, Burgundy, Bordeaux and North Rhone are utterly spectacular.
I don't know who imports Ogier into Aus, but find out and buy the stuff... barrel tastings left me speechless (and I am biased against... the winemaker is a NZer )
I would have gone ridiculously long on 2015 Bordeaux, but I figure that you just can't buy everything. So I limited myself EP to less than 10 cases.... proud of myself!!!.

Re: March 2018 Purchases
Now I feel positively sick. That's is just wrong. Perhaps fortunately my discretionary wine spend has disappeared for the past year as I decided to teach, or more accurately have others teach, the wife and two kids how to ski. After trips to Australian and US ski fields, they have come up to speed and the cellar taken a bit of hit.felixp21 wrote:

If I ever get to HK, I will come knocking to try this fabled Canon.

$700 is ridiculous, $180 e.p i forked out. So not too bad. Considering.
Re: March 2018 Purchases
Will do, Hunter. $180 for 2015 Canon is certainly worth it.... my guess is that it will look like amazing value in another 10 years.
