- 1998 Domaine La Garrigue Gigondas - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (30/10/2016)
Rarely for me, a wine drunk within a few days of purchase. Great to have the option to buy mature wines.
The colour is still reasonably dense and slightly dull purple/garnet, albeit with modest band of brick colour at the edge.
Appealing nose with gentle pastilley black fruits backed by subtle low notes of cocoa/barnyard.
Fruit lighter, more red-fruit influenced than the nose suggested, with a hint of spritz on the palate (I'm guessing this needed a day or two stood up to settle fine sediment implied by the slight haziness). Again pleasing cocoa/barnyard supporting & adding complexity, especially through the finish.

Great little wine. Second label of Dominica Wines. Ex Giaconda assistant winemaker for 13 years.
Inky Black with a beautiful nose of really jucy blackberry. I havent seen a wine for a while that is

I have a few of the 2005 Pegau for my son's birth year. I tried one recently as part of a selection of 2005 and it was clearly the wine of the evening for me.

2015 Schmolzer and Brown Brunnen Pinot Noir
I'm on a bit of a Schmolzer and Brown run lately, because having tried their belting rose I needed to see what else they were making. This is grown up Pinot. The nose is complex but mostly dark cherry and spice, shadows of earthy undergrowth. The palate is dominated by a variety of flavours, cherry, red fruit, a little pepper, brambles all in the savory spectrum. Tannin is plentiful but unobstructive, acid is abundant and cleansing. Mellow ruby colour which highlights the unfiltered nature of the wine without looking at all unclean. Finish is persistent and even. Very nice wine which has the acid and structure to age well and will definitely reward some time in bottle.

pennies 2008 128. cellared by yours truly since birth.
Filtered and decanted for an hour. drop top folks. great VFM.
Some may say opened a bit early, but i reckon from now onwards its in the window.
mitolo 2005 serpico. An oddly interesting wine. the early pick drying method pre ferment really comes thru on the palate.
lots of blackcurrant/semi raisin flavours. A very slight fortified/sweet/rich finish.
really couldn't make my mind up on this one. yeah nah yeah.

Jacob's Creek Reserve Shiraz 2014.. S/cap. From Waitrose/Ocado. About AU$14 equivalent. Dark cherry red colour, definitely red not purple. This is surprisingly medium bodied, with bright, crunchy red fruit and spicy undertones. The ripeness and tannin structure is in excellent balance. Good bistro style drinking now, but the balance and solid acid structure suggests promise for medium term cellaring. Good value.

Petaluma Merlot 2004- I quite enjoyed this as a weekday quaffer in front of netflix. Crafted long- length, plum pudding, mocha and earth and still grippy tannins. It will have it's detractors, a little disjointed overall with heavy handed oak and slightly green on the edges.

Yes, for all their detractors, they do seem very competent makers of high volume wine.

I recently saw a 2014 at auction. About $35 by memory. Sparked my interest as i remember thinking i hadnt seen a new vintage in years and didnt know if they were even making it any more.

K1 By Geoff Hardy 2009 Cabernet Tempranillo. An unusual blend but it seems to work with the cab providing a framework for the tempranillo. More cab than temp with the temp adding a little spice to the mix. Previous bottles had unresolved chewy tannins but this one was good. Lovely fruit. Should go another 5 years at least.

2014 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon
Highly aromatic nose of red fruit, violets, smoke, graphite and earth. Palate has plenty of plus red berries, pepper and spice. A little tannic but plenty of acid to keep it fresh and juicy. Finish is a bit short but this is a very tasty wine.

2010 was tight with wonderful length
2007 Leflaive was neither oxidised or over sulphured just corked!
2005 was as great as the Rousseau- i kept retasting - complex expressive white flower length

A couple of recent Penfolds wines.
1998 Bin 389 about a week ago.
Black ripe plum fruit, a big wine with a fair bit of vanilla oak.
I’d probably wait a couple of years before I open another one and hope the oak integrates.
1999 Magill Estate tonight.
Not as big as the Bin 389 maybe medium weight with some plums, black cherry and a little bit of spice. Still got some oak but more integrated.
My preference is the Magill Estate at the moment.
Got a 1996 Bin 389 standing up. I'll report how it goes when I open it.

2015 Tyrells Moon Mountain Chardonnay. Nice work balancing the fruit and wood. Nice enough for a mid week quaff on a warm Brisbane day and sub $20 too.

Yep also really enjoy the Clos des Papes. I picked up a few bottles from 3-4 vintages of the early 00s a few years back when Langton started describing them as Paul Avril which is apparently technically the correct name. They were going for around $60-70 pb as no one was bidding on them. Later they changed the description to Clos des Pape and prices doubled.

Last night I went to Boisdale on Bishopsgate... highly recommended old-school City restaurant. Scottish themed (lots of tartan pattern). Best value lobster in London and very good game in particular (and haggis)
They also have a very good wine list and occasionally some very good clearance offers- last night it was the Chateau Leoville Barton 2008 reduced to £77.
Very deep, dark red. Dense, primary nose, showing a lot of concentrated cassis, ripe blackcurrant, graphite. Very good length and balance. Quite a ripe, opulent style. Very youthful still, I imagine this will be even more impressive in another 3-5yrs.

2005 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro
Only the 2nd wendouree I've had, and I'm loving it as much as I loved the last one
To me, this is very approachable now, just needs a couple of hours in the decanter.
So much going on I don't know where to start with the flavours both on the nose and the palate
Finish is to die for, fo me atleast

2014 Turkey Flat Butchers Block SGM I have been enjoying gsm's (or sgm's) lately, so I thought I would give it a go. Sadly I was disappointed. Consumed over 2 nights, found it a bit one dimensional. Dark berry fruits/mulberry, lacking vibrancy and freshness, more full bodied than other Rhone style reds I have tried.

1999 Moss Wood Cabernet.
Dark red in colour. Blackcurrant, cherry with cedar and dried herbs.
Still has a lot on tannins but very fine. Drinking really well with food. Loved it.

2014 Grant Burge Shiraz Filsell
Drank from plastic cups whilst outside to view the Super Moon.
Dark inky purple, clear with no sediment like I've had with older Filsells.
Popped and poured, with nutty (vanilla?) wafts coming out straight away. Lots of dark fruits on the nose.
Taste was similar however wasn't the fruit bomb I'd expected, possibly the oak hid some of that fruit, but not in a bad way. Wasn't too much oak either. The vanilla nuttiness moved more coconutty on the palate with some chewy tannins too.
The finish was medium long, and my inner lips and mouth were stained purple big time, more so than other red's I've had recently. Overall not too bad for a young Filsell. 87pts
